Darkness In The Morning

6:59

7:15

8:47

I was up at 5:45, the crack of dawn and there was literally a crack of light off to the south. It's 7:15 now and a huge, dark cloud hovers over Bemus, with some light to the north and south, and another amazing morning sky. A chilly 41º requires an extra heavy fleece for my paddle, and I checked the rain gauge, and we got an inch and a half of rain over the past 24 hours. . It's just after 9:00 as we finish this. I kayaked for forty-five minutes, the first few minutes in the rain. I was surprised by the westerly wind, and how chilly it was. I was rewarded, however, with the first sighting that I can remember of a broad-tailed hawk.

Yesterday was another typical fall Sunday with football and dinner with friends. The only difference, the Bill's game started at 9:30 in the morning because they were playing Jacksonville in London. It was a miserable morning here so I didn't get in a paddle because of an inch of rain overnight and in the morning. I watched the first half, then took time off to read and help out in the kitchen, then finished the game although it was not much fun as the Bills did not play well and lost. By 1:00, it had cleared up some and Evie took time out from prepping dinner to make me breakfast, bacon, eggs, and toast. I watched a few minutes of another NFL game while eating but that was enough until 4:45 when the Chiefs game started. Clearly, we cheer for the Bills and Chiefs and enjoy watching both of their games.

Our neighbor's grandson, 6-year-old Louie, stopped over to see Evie and promptly pulled out the games and toys from the attic to play. Evie divided her time between the kitchen and playing with Louie for a good hour until his Dad came over because they were heading home to Cleveland. He's a delight, full of energy and fun.

By 6:00, we were ready for Linda and Ron, perhaps the beginning of our Sunday night dinners. Evie had brie and blue cheese ready and I made a pitcher of Old Fashioneds, so it was a good start to the evening, as the sky darkened and it got cooler. After our appetizers and libations, we adjourned for dinner, pork loin with a tasty sauce, roasted red potatoes, green beans, salad, and Chillingswoth pumpkin rolls, a perfect fall dinner. We were happy to be together once again on a Sunday and hope to keep up that tradition that started during COVID-19. We ended the night with Evie's apple pie and ice cream. We sat around talking until 9:30 when they headed home. I stayed up for a while, doing some dishes and watching football but Evie decided to go up to bed.
