7:00

The morning quiet is deafening after yesterday. We are now up to twelve with two more to arrive this afternoon. At the moment, it's 6:30 since I slept in until 6:00. I am surprised at the chill in the air, 53ยบ, although it will get up into the high 70s later in the day. I was able to kayak for an hour, chasing after a couple herons but they flew off just as I got my camera out.

What's So Funny?

Yesterday was a busy day for me, and fun for the gang. As usual, I got in a good paddle for an hour and came home to just a couple of family up. The kids were still sleeping of course. I finished the blog, had breakfast, got the boat ready, and gathered the trash to take to the Transfer Station. When I returned everyone was up, enjoying coffee or some sort of breakfast. Many enjoy a healthy breakfast like me, yogurt, and granola but others enjoyed Evie's crepes, a family favorite with sugar and lemon.

At 10:30, I left for the airport and picked up Nick, Aundraya, and Marlena. Fortunately, they were on time, arriving at 10:30, from Kansas City, via New York. On the way home, we ran into a traffic jam because of an accident and using Waze, we left the highway, and drove a backroad for 15 minutes, until we jumped back on Interstate 90.  I think we saved time. We got back to the lake at 2:45 starved and Evie heated up the leftover Slovenian sausages and hotdogs for us. The rest of the afternoon we hung out either in the yard, porch, or dock although it was too windy to go for a boat ride. Cocktail hour began early, around 4:30 when we began playing bean bag. It was a lovely afternoon, sunny and cool, perfect for being outside.

Yesterday, Evie had pulled a five-pound English cut roast out of the freezer, made a marinade, and let it sit in the refrigerator for 24 hours. It's one of our favorite dinners.  I put it on the grill at 6:30, charred both sides, grilled it for about a half-hour, then took it off, and then grilled four Delmonico steaks. Once the steaks were done, I sliced the roast and steaks, put them on a platter, and we feasted on the meat, Evie's twice-baked potatoes, mushrooms, and salad. It was a classic Chautauqua night to eat outside, a slight breeze so everyone put on a sweater or fleece. After dinner, everyone helped clean up so Evie and I did not have to do anything. We moved inside and Evie and the girls served dessert, a lemon/lime pie, on a Ritz cracker crust, topped with whipped cream, a perfect ending to our meal. We sat around talking until 10:00 when some went to bed, the grandchildren to the TV room to watch episodes of Schitt's Creek.
