Gray On Gray

A Magnificient Great Blue Heron

6:26

8:25

At 7:00, it's not an appealing morning sky, as gray clouds hang over a gray lake. It's a surprising 64º but the temperature will stay in the 70s the rest of the day. Not a boat in sight with a few raindrops on the window as I get ready to kayak. Now it's 8:35, Evie's still sleeping and I just returned from an hour on a cloudy lake morning, a few fishing boats but no kayakers.

Yesterday, Monday, Labor Day was bizarre as it was overcast and drizzling on and off during the day and basically, everyone headed home. There was not much action on the lake, no picnics in the neighborhood. We had a typical Monday in that I paddled, then did the blog and had breakfast as Evie planned our dinner because we were having Linda and Ron over for a picnic. Around 11:00, Evie had a list made and sent me off to Wegman's to pick up a few things for our dinner. I was surprised that it was so busy but then, it always seems busy no matter what day of the week. I picked up what I needed and was home by 12:15. As I walked in, the smell of a peach pie filled the kitchen. We put things away and I did up some of the dishes then had my lunch, the leftover eggplant, and rigatoni.

Heron Hanging Out In The Afternoon

The afternoon went slowly for some reason, perhaps because we stayed in the house because of the weather. Evie got things ready for our dinner and I read, napped, helped out and watched quite a bit of the Nadal tennis match during the afternoon. Ron and Linda arrived at 6:00, bringing a nice cold bottle of white wine. We quickly moved to the porch, chilly for once and had appetizers, corn fritters that Evie had just made along with spiced cashews. We had not seen Linda and Ron in a couple of weeks so we had a lot to catch up on. We stayed on the porch until 7:30 when Ron and I went out and grilled burgers and hot dogs, perfect picnic food to go with Linda's famous potato salad. Dinner tasted great even though we had to eat in the dining room. We finished dinner at about 9:15 with Evie's peach pie, so good that Linda had to have seconds. We said good-by around 9:30 and worked in the kitchen for 15 minutes, cleaning up before watching some TV and going up to bed. A strange Labor Day but ultimately good.
