Feeling The Heat

My Favorite Dahlia, Lucky Number

6:56

It's later than usual, 8:45, as I start this after a good paddle of close to an hour on a typical Monday on the lake, a few boats, a couple of paddlers and that's it. It's warming up already, in the low '70s and should get in the mid 80's later in the day.

Sunday was a warm one, like today is supposed to be, so we tried to get things done earlier rather than later.  After a paddle, Evie made up a list for Wegman's because we were having friends over at 5:30 for drinks and appetizers.  So I was off by 10:30 after getting a few things done in the yard, leaving Evie to clean both porches.  Wegman's was as busy as I have ever seen it, all check-out lines open with five or six people waiting in each line. I guess shopping has taken the place of churchgoing.  I of course picked the wrong check-out line; it's becoming a habit.

I was home by 12:30, helped Evie a bit with the porches, then had an amazing breakfast, a Turkish menemen, eggs, tomatoes, and feta cheese with a sesame seed bagel. We were both able to take it easy much of the afternoon, hunkering down inside our house to get away from the heat.  By 4:00, however, Evie was putting together our appetizers and drinks, our daughter Jill's recipe for bruschetta and our new favorite, corn fritters.  O, yea, she also made a pitcher of what are called faux whiskey sours, with a can of beer, a can of frozen lemonade, and at least 10-12 ounces of whisky.  Quick, easy, and tasty.

Good Friends, Dick and Karan

Dick and Karon arrived at 5:30, just as  Evie was finishing sauteeing the fritters.  We had not been together with them since late last summer when they had us for drinks on their porch.  It was good to see them both doing well, after a winter in Florida and a visit from their kids this summer. I taught Dick's oldest son Rick at Reserve so we have known each other for quite a while but we both got to know them much better when we retired and I became a member of the Thursday breakfast club.  They stayed until close to 8:00 and all four of us loved the appetizers, gorging on them in place of dinner.  After they left, we cleaned up the kitchen, then watched the US Women's Volleyball team easily win a Gold Medal by beating Brazil in three straight. We ended the evening with another episode of HBOmax's The White Lotus.
