Censure, Impeachment Or The 25th?

8:00

A dark morning here in America and I wonder if the sun will rise. Yesterday was unimaginable until it wasn't, as we watched Trump loyalists storm the capitol at the urging, the inciting of Trump, his family, and his enablers like Rudy Giuliani, Ted Cruz, and Josh Hawley.  There is no excuse for this, for the lukewarm response of the police to the riotous behavior of the insurgents, to the Republicans who chose to question the integrity of the election, fueling the lies of Trump, leading to yesterday's terrorist attack on the Capitol, on Democracy.  Never again will I think "It can't happen here." And I have heard many suggest "This is not who we are."  I disagree; this is who we have become, mostly as a result of Trump and his enablers, and the lies they have sold to his gullible supporters.

Until 2:00 yesterday afternoon, it was a typical Wednesday.  I kayaked briefly, wrote the blog and we discussed whether to get outside for a walk and where.  We did not have to worry about dinner because we were having wings from the VFW with Linda and Ron.  Around 11:00, we drove to Mayville and walked for an hour on the Webbs Trail, basically a Rails To Trails path.  It was partially frozen but easy enough to walk on and we loved it despite the cold and gray skies.

A Brief Happy Day

Lunch was the last of the leek and potatoes soup and toasted cheese sandwich.  We were both looking forward to the confirmation of President-Elect Joe Biden which, we assumed would be over by late afternoon.  What a joke.  Instead, we watched with the rest of the world as the myth of America's greatness exploded at the hands of Trump's supporters, who destroyed and demeaned the sacred and hallowed halls of the Capitol.  Like the rest of the world, we were shocked and saddened at this insurrection, the fear it created for those inside the Capitol.  We spent the afternoon following it on TV, wondering when the National Guard, the Capitol police, would arrive and take over.  For some reason, it did not happen until after 6:00, and even then, no one seemed to have been arrested, in fact, no force was used to remove anyone in the Rotunda, even the white supremacist's carrying the Confederate flag. By the way, it took Evie and me a couple of hours of watching the insurrection before we spotted a black protester.  Just saying.

We left for Linda and Ron's at 6:00 and continued to watch television with them, but with beers and popcorn until Ron and I drove to the VFW and picked up wings and fries.  We spent the next hour enjoying our dinner, watching Congress who were back in session.  Many spoke about the earlier insurrection from the heart, others pontificated and sought to mitigate their support for Trump and his lies, which led to the mob.  We left about 9:45, fat and happy from a healthy night of wings, fries, and beer.

When we returned home, we continued to be riveted by the pundits, the speeches by various Congressmen until we were too tired to continue watching and went to be.
