A Week Since The Siege

Bald Eagles This Morning

7:39

8:17

For some reason, I was up at 5:30, ready for bear, so I started writing my blog at 6:30, in the darkness of the early morning.  I am listening to Morning Joe and reading both the NYTimes and Washington Post's opinion pieces.  And I am checking when we can sign up for a Covid vaccine.  Nothing is clear or easy so far in Chautauqua County.

Path To Tom's Point

Nothern Sky

Tuesday was another typical Chautauqua gray day, with temperatures in the 30's, like most days lately at the lake.  We were not sure what to do with our day but finally decided on a walk in the morning and Evie was going to pick up groceries from Wegmans' using the Istacart app.  We decided on a walk close by, a walkout to Tom's Point, its parking area only three miles away.  It's a fairly short walk, just under two miles but we enjoy it.  The weather was chilly, with a bit of wind on the way back, just the way we like it.  We both were thinking it would be a good area for cross country skiing because it is so flat.  All we need is snow!

We drove the Honda there and back but when I went to start it up after lunch, the motor would not catch. Since I had just put a new battery in a month ago,  I called AAA and they came and towed it again to my mechanic.  It may be time to get rid of the good old 2000 Honda Accord.  Lunch, by the way, was the last of the vegetable soup and Evie made tuna melts.  After lunch, I could not wait to get back to my Michael Connelly book.  Evie, however, drove off to Wegman's to pick up our groceries, leaving me 'home alone' for an hour.  She returned with the car groaning with paper bags filled with good stuff.  I was amazed at the number of bags, the amount of groceries, enough I suppose for at least a week if not more.

Just as were putting things away Evie got a call from our summer neighbor, Joyce,  finishing 15 minutes before Evie's Zoom call with her sisters at 5:00.  After the call, our dinner was easy because Evie picked up sushi and Asian noodles from Wegmans when she shopped briefly in the produce area.  The sushi was great, the noodles average, a bit tasteless for me, needing more heat, more spice.  We watched Colbert, then Jeopardy and Shep before ending the night with a couple of episodes of The Looming Tower, about 9/11.

The irony of the show was not lost on us.  While the CIA in The Looming Tower was worried about the terrorist abroad, white supremacists, domestic terrorists, and vigilante groups within the United States were just beginning to organize.  Both Al Queda and Trump cultists are true believers,  angered by their loss of status, their powerlessness in a changing society, their violence motivated by moral conviction.  The Trumpers who stormed the Capitol want to return to the good old days, the 1950s of racial privilege and white male power.
