A daily journal of our lives (begun in October 2010), in photos (many taken by my wife, Evie) and words, mostly from our home on Chautauqua Lake, in Western New York, where my wife Evie and I live, after my having retired from teaching English for forty-five years in Hawaii, Turkey, and Ohio. We have three children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandson, as you will notice if you follow my blog since we often travel to visit them. THE QUANTUM SPY: DAVID IGNATIUS
A Seattle firm is close to a breakthrough in creating a quantum computer, which would drastically change the power structures in the world. It would be a paradigm shift, like a Newton or Galileo. CIA head Johny Vandel convince's Jason Schmidt, the developer, to give the US total control of the technology despite the fact that Schmid would like to see it available to the world. China was interested in buying the company, to gain the technology but now hopes to steal the technology.
Ignatius's protagonist, Harris Chang, is one of the few Chinese Americans in the CIA. He is also an Iraq veteran. Whether it's because he's Chinese or competent, Vandel chooses Harris to help find a mole in the CIA, who is sending info to the Chinese. In the process of using Harris as bait, the Chinese try to counter his efforts and turn him. Harris eventually helps to undercover the mole and compromises the Chinese Ministry of Security, Li Zian. Harris is likeable, a true patriot who discovers his Asian roots, complicating his attitudes and his mission. He realizes nothing is black and white; everything is more complicated then it seems.
