I really liked this, the fourth or fifth by Winslow who always knows his subjects well, whether the Narcos in California, or in this case, the crooked cops in New York City. Detective First Class Dennis John Malone is the protagonist in this police epic about a cop gone wrong. Dennis heads an elite fleet of three, with a newbie just added, Levin. They are legendary for their effectiveness, but they also take bribes, have branched out to drugs as well. They bond on Bowling Nights, no wives, steaks, drinks and whores. The team all have families, whores on the side, and are cruising toward retirement thinking of themselves as better than the thugs and drug lords they arrest. Unfortunately, this life cannot last forever. Reading it makes you wonder if police act this way. Probably, maybe worst. It's a long fast read and though fictional, it rings true.
