Happy Independence Day

I slept in some till 6:45 on an overcast 70º morning.  The lake, surprisingly is not very busy yet although a couple skiers have gone by, a few fishing boats.  It does not look like a very nice day, lots of clouds, heat, perhaps some rain later.  I paddled out around 7:30, over to the Long Point Bathhouse, along  Long Point, over to Sandy Bottom and home.  No birds alas except the ubiquitous turkey vulture.

Yesterday was very busy and I bagged yoga for the second day in a row.  I did get in a good paddle before we got busy with our day.  Evie was determined to get our dinner mostly done as well as tomorrow nights' dinner as well as a dessert so she can enjoy the company and not spend all her time in the kitchen.  So it was a busy day for her, somewhat so for me. And the heat and humidity made it even worse as it was easy to work up a sweat if you did anything.  So Evie spent a good part of the day in the kitchen, and I helped by cleaning up, vacuuming the bedrooms, which we got ready, and just making sure everything was ready by 4:00 for the arrival of my sister and brother in law. 

Ellen and Walt arrived around 4:30 from Virginia.  Their drive was easy and not very busy for a day before the Fourth Of July.  First, my sister, who has a great garden, had to check out and admire Evie's garden, as many perennials are starting to bud, some to flower.  We decided to sit on the front porch and ended up staying there until dinner, with wine and guacamole.  It was starting to cool down some so it was pleasant just relaxing after a tiring day for both of us.

Around 7:00, Evie put together our dinner, a recipe from my son Tom, shrimp with asparagus and sun-dried tomatoes over penne pasta.  It was great,  a perfect dish for dining al fresco.  And eating outside is always special for some reason, like a present.  All of this, however, was a prelude for dessert, napoleons filled with lemon cream and raspberries, encased in layers of phyllo dough, a dish my sister Ellen has always wanted Evie to make especially for her.  It was exquisite, light, creamy, with layers of fresh raspberries.  We sat outside on the porch as the sky darkened and went in around 10:00 when all four of us decided we were tired and ready for bed.
