When the novel opens, Eleanor has been working quietly in an office for ten years,  She lives alone, solitary and friendless, a quirky seemingly independent young women.  It's only when she strikes up a friendship with Raymond, a fellow worker, that we begin to discover the real Eleanor, the Eleanor she wants to forget. ****
