46º...Enough Said

6:42

7:44

8:18
I slept in some, till 6:45 but was able to see the sun squeeze between the cloud banks to the east.  It was so cold last night that I had to get up in the middle of the night and find a blanket because our window was open.  Evie, of course, loves it, the nice, cool fresh air, a harbinger of the cold to come.
The gusty wind rustles the leaves, keeps the flag flying, and churns up the lake.  No boats in sight as the Labor Day weekend begins.

We had grand plans for yesterday but petered out in the afternoon.  We were not sure what to do for dinner, decided on cabbage rolls which we had frozen in the freezer.  That meant no need to go to the store.  We decided, then, to attempt to start our walking season, now that it has cooled off some.

Long Point State Park
We got out our hiking boots, fanny pack, camera and water and drove to the end of Lakeside Drive in Bemus Point.  We worried that Long Point State Park might be muddy but it was fine and typically we were the only ones walking a couple of miles long trail.  Nature, especially a hike in the woods, is our mood enhancing drug.  It's been awhile, probably since last spring.  So it felt great, the quiet, the still green bushes and trees, the patches of vinca, a ground cover, all made for a fun walk.

Vinca, Our Favorite Woods Ground Cover
We were bothered occasionally by lake flies, so we skipped walking out to Long Point, deciding to just head back to the car through our favorite part of the walk, the Black Locust path.  On the way home, we ran into our good friend, Barb, whom we usually run into at the Viking Club.  She and a friend were out for a walk along Lakeside Drive.

Before heading home, we drove to Peterson's Farm Stand because Evie wanted some local peaches. It's a  good time for local produce, as there were not only baskets of peaches but bushels of tomatoes for canning.  We ended up buying not only a basket of peaches but a melon and tomatoes as well.  By the time we got home, it was 1:30 and it seemed as if the day was already gone.  And by the time I had lunch, soup and a bagel with cream cheese and tomato, it was 2:30 so we said the heck with doing anything and wasted the rest of the afternoon, reading, napping or puttering around the house, mostly getting bags of clothes ready for Buffalo's needy.

Around 6:00, we sat out on the front porch with a glass of wine, some guacamole, and chips and enjoyed the cool air, the slowly setting sun on the lake.  We didn't have to worry about dinner because I had cut up some potatoes before wine time and Evie boiled, then mashed them.  So dinner was ready when we were through with our wine and appetizers.  Evie pulled the cabbage rolls out of the oven, mounded mashed potatoes on our plates along with the cabbage rolls, and we had a winter dinner.  We watched Vice News, of course, as well as the news and a few other snippets of The Daily Show and James Corden.  I am reading another Longmire novel by Craig Johnson, my third,  so I was anxious to get back to it and went up to bed early,
