Martin Songs, Placid Lake, Overcast Skies

7:30
I was up just after 6:00 in time to see a sunrise but it was hidden behind a heavy bank of gray clouds. It looks like rain today with the temperatures perhaps reaching the 70's like yesterday.  It's a humid 62º morning, no fishing boats but lots of ducks floating by our dock.  It's 8:00 and I just got more bad news.  Our plumber called and said three of his guys are home sick so it look like we will be without water for another day.

Yesterday was our second day without running water, without showers or water to wash dishes which we were able to get around by using paper plates.  It's a pain but manageable except if you work in the yard and work up a sweat which both of us did most of the day.  After our coffee and time spent on our devices, either reading the NYTimes or writing the blog, we decided to get something done in the yard.  Evie wanted the red twigs pruned so we both spent a good part of the morning working on cutting out the dead wood, then using the electric hedge trimmer to cut the tops back.  We easily filled a couple of pails with dead wood and by noon, they were looking quite spiffy.

We then decided to have our Sunday breakfast, so we came in, washed with a wash cloth and cold water from a jug before starting breakfast.  We were both hungry from our morning chore so the Turkish menemen omelet, with bacon and a bagel tasted great.  And because it was such a beautiful morning, we ate out on the dock, enjoying the sun and warm weather.

During the afternoon, Evie continued working in the yard, this time on our privets in the front yard.  I watched some NBA basketball, soon got bored, so I returned to Bosch and quickly fell asleep, tired from my morning work.  I slept for a half hour or so, woke refreshed and heard that Evie was firing up the lawn mower to cut our lawn.  I had not cut our neighbor's yard for a week, so I got out the other mower and for the next hour, we had twin lawnmowers going, giving the grass, dandelions and weeds a trimming.  By 5:00, both yards looked like a golf course and we decided to reward ourselves with a beer and pretzels on the dock. We settled into our chairs, noticed storm clouds to the south and had to run in within ten minutes because of the rain.

Filtered Rainbow

From Our Porch
So we sat on the porch, watching it rain, enjoying our beer and pretzels until the rain stopped and the most unbelievable rainbow appeared, spanning the lake in front of our house.  We have never seen one so clearly, so perfectly made.  We took photograph after photograph, trying to catch its magic.  After the storm, the sun came out and a raft of at least 20 of common mergansers cruised back and forth in front of our house for an hour, diving for weeds. They appeared to have a leader and when he would dive, the rest would follow.  We have never seen so many ducks together, so close to our wall.  There is always something to see on our lake.

We decided to eat at home despite the lack of water and we had some of the leftover chicken with an Indian spice sauce.  So Evie heated it up with rice in the oven, roasted some asparagus, and made a tomato and feta cheese salad and we had dinner.  Since we missed CBS Sunday morning because we ate out on the dock, we watched it, then another episode of Designated Survivor and the most recent episode of Showtime's The Circus, which has become a weekly show, at least for now.  It follows Trump and politics for the week, with interviews and comments.  It's worth watching and definitely not fake news.
