Sunny But Cold

6:24
6:34
It's 7:30 and I have been up for an hour, to a very cold morning, 28º, a dusting of snow on the lawn, my car windshield frozen.   It's nice to have  coffee this morning, see the sun, the blue sky, a few puffy clouds, and a raft of at least twenty ducks flying south.
Spring Snow
Yesterday, as I mentioned, began at 5:30 but I was home by 8:30, with a good breakfast in hand, appreciating the fact that my life was back to normal.  I  no longer had to fast, could eat and  drink what I wanted, do what I wanted, which was not much, just enjoy the day.  I was told to take it easy, could not drive, so I was stuck at home.  Evie was busy, though tired and it was one of those days where everything she did was difficult, just out of sync or tired from getting up early with me.

She got her mojo back, however,  late morning and decided to invite our neighbor, Mary Ann Miller, over for dinner.  She just arrived for the season this past weekend, lives alone, so Evie thought it would be nice to have her over.  She was happy to come.  We were having salmon and spinach  but I came up with the brilliant idea of also having Higbee's muffins.  When Evie and I were dating, back in the early 1960's, we used to go downtown to shop at Higbee's, one of Cleveland's three major department stores.  We would always have lunch at their Silver Grille, a huge dining area open only for luncheon shoppers.  We would order the same lunch each visit, the Chef Maurice Salad Bowl, and they always included two muffins.  Both were amazing and we missed them once the store closed. Well, a few years ago I found the recipe for both on the Internet, saved them, so Evie made them yesterday afternoon, and they were just as good as I remember.  In fact,  I had two mid afternoon, just to make sure they were right.  Yum.

We did not do much the rest of the afternoon, read, watched some TV, napped.  I started a new book, Caleb Carr's THE ALIENIST, a novel I began a few years ago, had to stop for some reason but always wanted to read it.   So I am into it, cannot wait to get back to it.

Evie picked Mary Ann up in the car even though she lives a few houses away as it was cold and icy out and we did not want her to fall.  We sat around and talked before dinner, finding out about her life this past winter at State College, PA, then had a nice dinner. She seemed to enjoy the meal as well as getting out of the house.  It can be lonely up her in spring, especially if you live alone.  After dinner, she seemed tired, so Evie took her home earlier than expected, around 7:30.  It was a nice evening for her, and we also enjoyed having her over.

We then watched the finale to our current favorite TV show, THE AMERICANS.  For some reason, it did not tape Wednesday evening so I had to buy it from Apple TV for three bucks, annoying but we wanted to see it.  It was a teaser of an ending, as we not cannot wait for next season to see what happens between Paige, the daughter, Pastor Tim, her mentor/friend, and her parents, Russian spies, Elizabeth and Phillip.  We then raced through American Idol, a show we are tiring of but nothing else was on so we ended up watching it.
