Ice Floes In The Morning |
|
Kayak Afternoon |
I slept in until 7:00 and came downstairs to a lakefront locked in by an ice floe. Amazing because yesterday afternoon, the lake in front of our house was open and we went kayaking for the first time in 2015. Late afternoon yesterday, we noticed an ice floe was beginning to blanket the eastern shore line, floating southward from the northern section of the lake. And this morning, more ice floes must have moved towards our house. I don't expect them to last long as it's already 52º, the high later today will be in the 70's.
Yesterday was a busy but fun day because I spent most of the morning and part of the afternoon, until a late breakfast working outside. I am not sure what took so long but I spent most of the morning raking leaves and twigs in the yard, enough to fill the garbage cans with twigs. Our willow tree is always messy, covering our yard and parking space with branches and twigs. I discovered a good way to work outside, moving our Sonos speaker out to our porch, filling the air with the tunes of U2 and other groups. Noone was around so I don't think I bothered anyone and it drowned out the leaf blower, one of the most annoying new sounds of the past twenty years. Talk about noise pollution.
I also began to take down summer things from the garage attic, gardening tools, Purple Martin house, some chairs, and put away winter things, snow shovels, ice fishing gear which we never used, and sleds, also never used because our grandchildren never made it out this winter. By 1:00 I was finished and happy, the yard looking spiffy, twigs taken away, winter things put away. And best of all, Evie had Sunday breakfast ready for me, eggs, bacon an bagels. We ate watching CBS Sunday Morning, our favorite but our minds were on the blue skies and lake, the outdoors, the lake smooth and inviting.

Our Russian Samovar |
While I was outside, Evie had pulled out our old Russian samovar out of the attic and spent a good amount of time polishing the brass, getting rid of years of grime and dirt, so it now looks amazing. We decided it would look good on our dining room buffet, along with our Turkish tea cups and glass dervishes. If anyone from Turkey or Russia can translate this writing and the date, let us know what it says. According to the statistics on my blog, I have many viewers in Russia.

So, after breakfast, we broke out our kayaking gear, life jackets, cushions, and paddles, and boots, and carefully pushed out kayaks into the ice cold water, gingerly stepped in, and we were off for an hour paddle, up to Whitney Bay, where another McMansion is being built. We stayed 20 or 30 feet from shore, in waters shallow enough if we tipped, we could stand. Yes, I am a 'careful boy.' It felt amazing to be on the water in April and there we even a couple of fishing boats out as well. We saw no ice as we paddled, thus our amazement this morning when we saw the ice in front of our house.

Paddling In Front Of The Newest McMansion |
We were home around 3:00 and spent the rest of the afternoon inside, watching the amazing golfing performance by the youthful Jordan Spieth. I think we have another Tiger in the making but one who seems more centered and humble. Let's hope he continues to wow golf fans because they need a new face to cheer for. It's hard to imagine the pressure he felt on his putts over the last few holes, knowing one mistake might cost him the title. The cliche 'nerves of steel' comes to mind.

Ice Floes Return To Long Point |
We had an easy dinner, tasty but not much prep. Basically, Evie cut up and seasoned potatoes, then two large onions cut in large pieces, and a pound of Italian sausage, cut up in thirds, covered it in foil and baked it at 400º for an hour, another 15 minutes uncovered and we had dinner. We also had a salad and brussel sprouts to get our veggies. We watched two episodes of The Americans, perhaps our favorite show at the moment and were depressed to know that only one episode remains. And Nurse Jackie is back on, so we watched it before going up to bed. It may be an accurate picture of someone hooked on drugs (Jackie), but after six years of it, she has become unsympathetic, manipulative and a liar, willing to do or say anything to get her net fix.
It's now 8:40 as I finish this blog, and the lake in front of our house is open once again, as the wind changed, moving the ice floes northward.
