DEAD EVEN: BRAD MELTZER

A rather silly thriller but I finished 400 pages in three days so it must not have been that bad.  Quite a difference in writing and aim between this and Erdrich's THE ROUND HOUSE.

Sara and Jared Tate are married, both lawyers.  Sara recently has lost her job but is about ready to start a new career as an Assistant District Attorney.  Jared is a hot shot lawyer in a boutique law firm, seemingly secure, on his way to partnership.  The trouble begins when Sara, reacting to the news that there will soon be budget cuts, jeopardizing her new job, takes a case earmarked for veteran DA Victor Stockwell, thus begins the story.  What seems like a simple burglary ends up being a murder case, with Sara the prosecutor, her husband, Jared, the defense lawyer.  What Sara doesn't realize is she's being set up for a fall.  She is supposed to get the case, as is her husband, who is told by his client that either he wins or he will kill Jared's wife, a compelling reason for Jared to win.  Of course, he doesn't tell his wife about this blackmail or the story would be two hundred pages shorter.  What ruined the book for me was when Sara is then threatened, by an anonymous blackmailer.  If she doesn't win, her husband will be killed.  And,of course, she doesn't tell Jared for the same reason he doesn't tell her about the blackmail, to protect him.  About three hundred pages into the book, they finally, tell each other about the black mail,  after arguing, then splitting up and living in different apartments  The plot is to confusing and silly to summarize (surprise, it involves money, revenge, and infidelity)  Just know that in the end, four individuals are murdered in the quest to find out who done it.  Jared loses his job; Sara almost does but is made into a heroine by the mayor.  And they both live happily ever after, so we assume, and Jared has a change of heart and wants to be come a DA like his wife.  I assume another novel is on the way, as the team of Jared and Sara Tate tackle the bad guys in Manhattan.  Actually, it could be a successful TV drama but it's been done before, LA Law and the current The Good Wife.
