Winter Rocks

7:52

It's another cold, white snowy morning here on the lake.  A few brave souls are out in the 18º morning, the lake a blanket of white, with a few colorful tents scattered along the lake.  I was up at 6:00, turned on the coffee, and listened to a couple of podcasts, one on the news, the other on sports,

Wednesday was a spectacular winter day, with blue skies and sun most of the day.  We couldn't wait to get outside and enjoy it. So after coffee and the blog, Evie, perky after a good night's sleep, quickly put together some peanut butter and oatmeal cookie dough.  She let it sit outside on the porch and we were in the car, ready to drive off to ski by 10:30.  We wanted to ski somewhere in the woods so we decided on Webb's Trail although it is also a snowmobile trail.  It was not the best of choices but we still enjoyed just being out, skiing, keeping our eyes open for the forty snowmobiles that raced by during our hour trek.  Like Seadoos, neither of us is sure of the allure of the snowmobile, other than speed. It must get boring and how do you enjoy nature at 50 miles an hour surrounded by gas fumes and noise. This past week, however, has been the best weather for snowmobiles in probably five years so we understand why there are so many out.

When we returned home, Evie made me tuna melts to go along with the Indian spiced cauliflower soup. I watched my show and was excited to get back to my book, Pachinko, which started out slow but I am now into it.  For a good part of the rest of the afternoon, we both sat inside thinking we should be outside enjoying the sun, blue skies, the lake. Unfortunately, neither of us had the mojo to get out there so we spent the afternoon feeling guilty at wasting the day.

A Spectacular Afternoon On The Lake

Ingenious Use Of Sled

Around 4:00, Evie put together a new meatball recipe, with a mixture of beef and pork, and instead of frying them, she let them bake in a tasty tomato sauce for thirty minutes until done.  Once they were done, we were able to relax and marvel at the fact that it was still light at 5:00 as the day waned. The meatball dinner was great, something Evie will make again. We watched the usual with one exception, a film on Prime Video called Sounds Of Metal, starring Riz Ahmed, nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor. It's the story about a rock duo's drummer who loses his hearing and the difficulties that ensue.  Ahmet is wonderful as he struggles with whether to accept his loss or attempt an operation and regain his hearing.

  1. Snowmobiling in CHQ is amazing. Especially when you get to the top of a hill and you can see all the way to Fredonia(and all the windmills) and look the other way across the frozen lake. I also x country ski. It’s peaceful. Snowmobiling is comparable to cruising in the summer in the boat vs. kayaking. They are both are amazing!(And our 2-up Yamaha is a smooth
quiet ride) Our parents are 85 and they are coming up this weekend with their own sleds. You and Evie will have to give it a whirl someday! Take care, Donna

  2. You convinced me! I would love to jump on a snowmobile and ride, ride, and ride. Both ways of recreation as you say are pleasurable but in different ways. Thanks for reminding me. Stay healthy and enjoy the trails. Tom And Evie
