A Fleeting Pink Sky

7:07

I woke to gray, then looked up a few minutes later and the sky was filled with pink, and a few minutes later it was back to gray. It's now 7:50 and we are both up, the lake a bright white against the dull gray sky.  And it's chilly out there, 12º, cold enough to discourage all but a few hearty ice fishermen.

7:10

Thursday morning kept us busy after the usual coffee, breakfast, and blog.  We had not been shopping in quite a few days so Evie had a large list ready to go.  First, however, we drove to Mayville's Rite Aid and were fortunate to get our second Moderna Covid 19 shot.  The pharmacist called us the night before to see if we could come in on Thursday because they had some vaccinations that would expire if they did not use them in the next couple of days. Then, we hit the Lighthouse Grocery and picked up an order from their butcher.  Then it was back to Wegman's.  I dropped Evie off and stopped at Evans for wine, then back across the street to a very busy Aldi's, packed with golden-agers like me, to pick up a few goodies we like there.  I then drove across the street to Wegman's, went inside, and helped Evie find the last couple of items on her list.  We picked the wrong check-out line as usual; I have to learn to be more patient with stuff like that.  I mean, where do I have to go?  What do I have to do? Not much.

When we returned home, we took the groceries in and Evie took her time putting things away, watching the Impeachment for a bit, then going back in the kitchen.  For lunch, she made me a chicken sandwich to go with the last of the black bean soup and I watched my show as Evie listened to the hearings as she worked in the kitchen.

Cross Country Skiing Afternoon

I finished my book, Cherry, an eye-opening look at the life of a heroin addict and his girlfriend, set in both Iraq and Cleveland. I napped briefly but by 3:00, the sun was in full force on the lake and we decided to get in some skin on the sun-drenched lake.  It was a mistake because the wind was a surprise, bitter cold when heading north, so we did not stay out long, maybe twenty-five minutes, a real disappointment. We then stayed out and the two of us shoveled the parking area and some of the drifts which blocked in the Honda in our garage, compliments of the plow guy.

Sky, Clouds, And Lake At 3:08

Earlier in the day, Evie baked some eggplant slices for our pasta dinner.  As we were sitting down enjoying a libation, we both came across what seemed like an easy recipe for Vodka Pasta with Rigatoni from the Smitten Kitchen.  We thought why not make it and add the eggplant slices. It turned out to be a  great idea, fairly easy and delicious.  We watched a Colbert, then a film from 2017 based on one of our favorites novels by Kent Haruff called Our Souls At Night. Robert Redford and Jane Fonda play widowers who find solace in each other, despite the opprobrium of the locals and their children.  It's a quiet, often touching film, with no violence, no superheroes.  We loved it and the book is even better.

As to the Impeachment trials, we doubt that Trump will be impeached but we both feel it was important to document his egregious misdeeds for posterity.  History will be the ultimate judge of both Trump and the complicity and compliance of the Republicans.
