Hanging Out In Kentucky |
What else, I am up early here at the Hampton Inn, in Bowling Green. hoping to get an early start. It's 5:45 and I am sitting in the lounge of the Inn, watching Fox News, de rigeur in most motels at breakfast.
We left Dallas, in the rain, just about 6:00 as we had hoped. It was a good thing because our drive took us over 11 hours, and most of the way it was either wet, rainy, or foggy. So it was not much of a drive scenic wise, just keep on chugging, mile after mile, exit after exit, state after state, passing truck after truck until we had enough and stopped, at a Shell/Mc Donald's combo, for a fill up and some fast food. Not yum. We were lucky, however, as the other side of Interstate #40 in Tennessee was backed up for miles because of a bad accident, involving at least two trucks and some passenger cars.

Leaving Texas |
We were not sure where we wanted to stop because we were not sure how long our drive would take. It looked like it would be an easy drive through Nashville, so we decided to drive on and stop in Bowling Green, Kentucky at a Hampton Inn which, fortunately, had a room. It was a good choice because the last hour and a half was through rain, fog, and it got dark around 4:15 so I had had enough driving when we pulled into the Inn.

Bowling Green Hot Spot |
And, as Evie's luck would have it, there was a Sports Bar called Rooster's a minute walk away. I must say Bowling Green is not the quiet, quaint little town I thought it might be, set in rural Kentucky. Traffic was terrible, six lanes wide, and the strip where we stayed had just about every hotel/motel, fast food restaurant, and gas station we could name and that's just at a first glance.

Beer Of Choice |
Roosters turned out to be a nice local place, 'a fun, casual, joint,' very crowded even on a Sunday night. We were lucky to find a place at the bar, had a good waitress and ordered a caesar salad for Evie, a barbecued chicken pizza for me, both good. There were probably 20 TV's in the bar and restaurant, so we were able to catch up on all the NFL games if we cared. It felt good to sit down and relax for an hour after our drive but even better to get back in our room, put on our jammies (if I had some) and snuggle up in our bed with a book and Sunday night TV. I would guess we were both asleep by 9:30 at the latest.
On to Chautauqua Lake!
