Fog Bound And Chilly

7:04
7:40
8:04
Well, I slept in, sort of, as I got up at 7:00 to a light foggy early morning, though I could see across the lake to Long Point.   Now, however, at 8:00,  the fog's so heavy that I can hardly see beyond the dock.  It's amazing to wake up to a chilly, 52ยบ morning, requiring me to search for my fleece.  Love it.

Yesterday, as I mentioned, we woke to a large branch from our tree resting on the ground, a result of 50-60 mph winds the previous evening.  So we were depressed a good part of the morning, as we knew we needed someone with a chain saw but we knew most of our neighbors were gone.  Then, I had to bright idea to call up my old buddy, Ron, who said he would be delighted to come over and bring his chain saw.  He arrived about 10:30, a reasonable time for a Sunday.  We both struggled to get his chain saw started and just as we were about to give up, it sputtered then roared and we were ready for bear.  He would cut a branch and I would take it away; the larger branches, Ron cut so we could use it as firewood.  It took perhaps 20 minutes to a half hour of cutting before Ron was done. He saved the day, no doubt, and now, unfortunately, I owe him one.

After he left, Evie and I worked for an hour gathering the branches, the twigs, the leaves, stuffing them into the back of my Honda Pilot and I took them up the hill to the brush pile.  We were done with everything by noon.  We both putzed around in the yard until 1:00 when we came in and had breakfast.  It was then time for NFL football and I watched it for about 15 minutes and had enough of the hype, the games.  I just cannot get into it beyond a few minutes.  Evie then surprised me by saying she thought she would go off to a local store, just up the street, Timeless Treasures, that always seemed to be closed when we stopped.  (Back Story:  we stopped Saturday,  Evie opened the door and the security alarms were set off.  Apparently the door was unlocked all night -- she called the owner and explained the situation, they are now on a first name basis.)  Evie was gone much of the afternoon, or so it seemed and ended up having a great time, talking not only with the Laura, the owner, but various people who came in.  And she came home with what she wanted, three hand crafted, wooden pine trees, with small lights for the Holiday Season.  Yes, we are now ready for our favorite time of the year, the Christmas season.

While she was gone, I read, napped then worked in the yard, pulling those clinging vines that tend to choke and kill bushes and trees.  They are a pain and can be lethal if we don't get to them.  I also planted a couple of new privets Evie picked up the other day from Art Sample.  Around 5:00, we decided to support the Jamestown ChalkWalk and drove downtown, parked our car on Main, and walked around the downtown, viewing the various contestants art work on the sidewalks.  It was not very well attended, perhaps because it had to be postponed from Saturday.  So, it was a bit disappointing, both in terms of the contestants as well as spectators.  I am sure some of the artists from previous years could not make it.

After we finished, we voted for our favorite, then drove to Wegman's to do a little shopping which ending up being a lot.  We then ordered a Mushroom Man's pizza from the Ashville General Store and picked it up on the way home for dinner.  Neither of us felt like fussing, a pizza with a salad, sounded good and easy.

We were determined to start a new series, so we watched the first episode of the British series, Indian Summer, but it felt overdone, Downton Abbey on steroids set in India.  So we tried a Spanish series our daughter Beth recommended, THE TIME IN BETWEEN, set in Spain and North Africa during the Franco era, around 1938.  We liked it enough to watch two episodes before going up to read and sleep.

Today I have yoga at 9:30, then both of us are going over to our friend Jack's house, to help with hop picking.  He has to get them ready for the brewer by tomorrow at noon, so he needs lots of bodies to pick the hops.  We did it last year and it was fun...for a while.
