7:15 |
After three and a half years of writing a blog each morning, I finally have run out of descriptions of the morning sky, so I will just leave it at Monday. It's just after 7:00, and both Evie and I are sipping coffee, surfing the Net, occasionally listening to NPR. It is springtime warm 55º, may get up to 80 later in the day, with some rain forecast.

Long Point State Park Greening Up |
Sunday was another almost perfect day, sunny, warm, little if any wind, so we got out on the lake by 9:00, paddled over to Long Point and to our surprise, two people, a man and a woman, were fishing from their kayaks just off of Long Point. They were hoping to find some walleyes. We paddled along the shoreline to the Marina, slowly coming to life, then across the lake to the Power Boat Club, then home along Wells Bay and Victoria. A great morning to be on the lake, to be outside, so we decided to go for a hike in the woods, and decided on a section of the Fred Cusimano Westside Trail. We drove to the trail head just east of Sherman, on Mt. Pleasant Road, parked our car, and walked about 100 yards and started our hike. Unfortunately, the trail was wet and muddy, so we spent a good part of our hike hugging the edges of the trail, walking through muck, jumping from one dry area to another, not much fun. And the woods were starting to green but it was still mostly bare, not much to look at and enjoy. Needless to say, we were glad to get back to our car, wet with sweat from the warm morning. We were out for about an hour, probably walked just under two miles if that.
We were home by 12:30, thought about breakfast at the Stedman Coffee Shop, but Evie's breakfast was more tempting, so we enjoyed our usual of bacon, eggs, and toast, as we watched part of CBS Sunday Morning. It was too nice out to stay inside watching TV, so Evie got her book and towels together, and went out on the dock, to enjoy the sun. I soon followed for awhile, but the wind had picked up some, so I came in to read but Evie stayed out much of the afternoon. Lots of action with neighbors up, the Kinney boys were putting in the dock, others were up just enjoying the weekend at the lake. And daffodils are finally up, some color finally in the Woodlawn yards.

We both had a hankering for burgers and fries, so I drove off to the Lighthouse to pick up some ground chuck, pickles, buns, and russet potatoes. I had read about 'garlic fries' on a blog and wanted to try them. So around 5:30, Evie peeled and cut up the potatoes, minced some garlic, heated it in oil, drained the oil, then tossed the garlic oil with the fries. She then put them in a 450º oven for 35 minutes and they ended up cooking too quick, turning brown within 15 minutes and we ended up with crunchy potato sticks, not french fries. We followed the recipe carefully, so I am not sure why they turned out so differently. The burgers, however, were great, 3 1/2 minutes per side on a hot grill and they are medium rare. With pickles, onions, mayo and ketchup, we had the kind of dinner we longed for on Sunday afternoon.
We watched our usual TV, some Colbert and Stewart until 9:00 when the shows we look forward to each week come on Nurse Jackie, then The Good Wife, written and produced this week by one of my former students, Ted Humphrey. I finished my Travis Mc Gee book, started my first James Patterson ever, the first Alex Cross book. We will have to see how it goes. He's the best selling writer in the world, at least that's what the full page ad in The New Yorker said.
