Morning On The Beach |

An Afternoon Of Lounging In A Tide Pool |

7:34 In The Morning |
First one up of course, at 6:15, a rain pelted beach and cloudy but now, at 6:50, the sun is breaking through the clouds to the east and lots of blue sky out our windows, the beginning of another great day here. I walked out on the beach just after I got up and because of the rain, the vast beach was a flawless mat, smooth, no footprints, detritus, nothing, just a vast, virgin desert of sand. Impeccable.
Yesterday began the routine here at the beach, one we will no doubt follow for most of the week. First, Drew and I are up, followed by various adults, one or two of the girls, then Nick and Mitch, and finally, our junior at Dartmouth, Tyler, emerges around 11:00. All the kids ask what's for breakfast, thinking they are are Chautauqua, where Evie will have pancakes ready but here we tell them everyone is on there own, for both breakfast and lunch. So everyone gets out cereal or toast and Some of the adults are out early, walking the beach, but most of us mosey down to the water about 11:00 despite it being high tide. And that's how the rest of the day goes, beaching it, walking some, body surfing, then coming up for a lunch of sandwiches around 1:00.

Most of us then relaxed inside for an hour or so, then about 2:30, headed back to the beach, the adults that is. Rami, however, and the boys took two cars and drove to Sneads Ferry, to the gift shops and the muddle of tourists and traffic, where the girls all got sweatshirts. And later, Tom and Mary went to the grocery store, a Food Lion, with a list, something we will have to do everyday no doubt.

By 3:00, we were all on the beach, took out the boogie/body boards (we used to call them paipo boards in Hawaii in the 1960's) and had a blast surfing the waves. Everyone got into it, even the moms and girls. It was just a perfect afternoon, a huge tide pool, vast enough for kids to paddle their paddle boards in it. All 15 of us ending up just sitting in it in two to three feet of calm waters, talking, drinking beers, sunning and watching each other surf.

Our early evening was planned around the soccer game. So at 6:00, we took a family picture, something we have to do each summer. This is the first time we won't have Chautauqua as a backdrop. Early in the day, Jill put pasta sauce and meatballs into the slow cooker, so we had loads of spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, along with a salad and garlic bread, good and easy. We watched the game, excited at the US's early goals, then went out on the beach at half time to see if we could get another family picture at dusk, when the light was right. We then watched the rest of the game, thrilled by the US victory. And to end the evening, we celebrated Tyler's birthday, since he was at college, with a birthday cake and ice cream. A good way to end the day. Around 9:00, Shark Week resumed on TV, something that always seems to be on in the summers when we get together and the boys always watch it. This time however, everyone was glued to the TV, watching these guys try to drum up some drama out of a guy in a cage. Pretty lame I think but most seem to like it. Evie and I were the first to head up to bed, around 10:15, the girls headed to their bedroom too, to watch a movie no doubt. They love their room, being isolated from the adults, with a TV and iPads to browse, the good teenage girl life.
