A Hot And Hazy Morning at Topsail Beach

Skim Boarders
Over The Falls
6:16
I was up at 6:10, with Drew and now Evie at 6:30.  A quiet house, just the sound of the waves, the hum of the refrigerator, the smell of coffee.  It's our first really gray morning here at the beach but will clear up later as the haze burns off, a high today of 93º.

The days are starting to merge together, so it's difficult to keep one day's activities from another. Yesterday began for Evie and I with a walk on the beach around 9:30, as the tide was coming in.  We always try to start our walk with the wind at our back, so when we return, the wind hits our faces, cooling us.  Most of the family were late coming down to the beach, Jill walking, Hayden and Drew went for a three and a half mile run, amazing in this kind of heat.  Nick, as well, went for a run, getting ready for his soccer season.  And his Mom, Mary, also went for a run.

Beginnings of a Sand Castle
So, Evie and I were the lazy ones, only going for a walk.  We beached it till about 1:00 and the surf was really good, so Tommy, Drew and I really got a work out.  For a few minutes, I thought I was a young twenty five year old in Hawaii, body surfing, and getting caught in what we called the washing machine, as the wave tumbled you over a couple of times.  I soon realized, however, that I was really a 71 year old body, so I won't be doing that again.

A Moment Of Quiet
From 1:00 to 4:00, most of us hung out in the house, having lunch, staying out of the sun during its hottest hours and it was high tide, so there was little beach left.  The kids played a card game we often play at Chautauqua called Telefunky, which my Mom taught them.  It felt good to relax, get out of the sun for awhile.  Around 4:00, Jill, Drew, Tom and Mary visited friends of Jill's from Virginia at a Tiki Bar, about five miles to the north of us.
Girly Silliness
More Silliness
Evie and I and the girls and guys went to the beach, as the tide was rolling out.  The girls got a bit bored, so all eight of us went to the swimming pool, a spent an hour there, annoying I am sure to the people lounging in their chairs.  Too bad as we were having great fun.  We then went back to the beach, and it was perfect for Nick and Mitch to skim board, the tide rolling out.  It was the beginning of that magic hour on the beach, where the colors change, the temperature drops and you don't want to leave the beach to go upstairs and make dinner. But we did.

Nick Cooling It
After we showered and got ready to start dinner, the Tiki Bar crew returned to help.  Evie had par cooked chicken thighs, so Drew and I went out and barbecued them on the grill.  Evie made her special egg noodles cooked in chicken broth, and we boiled some corn and made a salad.  Everyone seemed to be starved, even the girls, so we had nothing left. We sat around the table after dinner for a good forty five minutes, just talking, no devices to interrupt a conversation. It was nice.
Barbecued Chicken And Noodles Dinner
Shark Week began at 9:00, so most adjourned to watch it except for Beth and me.  We put on our beach shoes and went for a walk on the darkened beach because it was low tide.  Others were out as well, some with flashlights, others with headlamps.  We had neither but it was just bright enough for us to make our way.  We were out for a good forty five minutes and on our way back, we noticed that someone had made a huge maze in the sand in front of their house.  We tried to walk it and ended up talking with three teenage boys who said they make it each night if they can.  It was really cool, and obviously disappears at low tide.  When we got home, the living room was empty except for Mitch as everyone went up to bed.  I went upstairs but no Evie.  So I went down to the girls room and their she was, in bed with Marisa and Hayden, laughing and giggling like teeny boppers.  They love their Granny.  I went up to read and Evie soon followed.
