I woke way too early, at 5:00, heard some fishermen talking at 5:30, so I got up to see what was going on, just guys getting ready to go out fishing in the dark morning. It's 61º and a haze blankets the lake, the only sound, the hum of lake flies. I shudder at the forecast for the next six days, sunny with highs in the 80's every day. This is not the Chautauqua we remember, the Chautauqua we enjoy.
Yesterday began well, as I mentioned, with kayaking in the fog, then a morning swim. I felt ready for bear. Then things settled down, as the heat began to invade our home, despite closing the windows. We decided that because of the heat, we would get our big shopping for the week over, so Evie got out her iPad, opened her Wegman's app. and made up a list which tells which aisle to find your item. Cool. We stopped first at Peterson's Farm in Fluvanna, on the other side of the lake. They finally had baskets of semi-local peaches, so we bought one along with other veggies. We were gone for close to two hours, getting a whopping Wegman's bill of $180.00, a record high for us, normal for a family I assume. We forgot to get the 5% senior discount, so Evie went back in and came out with nine bucks. Waste not, want not. We then stopped at Walmart, to pick up some oil for my boat, always a wake up call to the lives of others. We were home by 1:00, in time for me to put together a black bean soup, easy and good, with lots of tomatoes, beans, and sun dried tomatoes. Lunch was a bagel, with salmon cream cheese and some leftover chicken.
Neither one of us was willing to sit on the dock, the sun penetrating, the humidity heavy, so we sat under our trees, in the shade, enjoying an occasional breeze. And that was it for much of the afternoon, enjoying the outdoors, reading, dozing off. I finally got fed up with sitting, went for a swim to cool off, sun dried on the dock, before coming in. It was about 5:30 when we decided to take advantage of our boat. It's just been sitting there for a week, so we took off the cover and had a nice cruise over to the Viking Club. The bar was surprisingly crowded, with mostly golden agers like us, taking advantage of the happy hour. We sat there for an hour, talked with a couple we have gotten to know, the Fish's, who live in Magnolia. Theresa Fish gave us a flyer about a kayak paddle to support the Susan Komen Foundation, on September 13. We hope we can make it, a good cause and it should be fun. And we bought tickets to the Labor Day Clucks and Bucks, a raffle and a barbecued chicken dinner for ten bucks a piece. We have gone before and enjoyed it, plus you have a chance to win some cash and it supports the club.
We were home by 7:00, so I fired up the grill, Evie wrapped some potatoes in foil, for grilling. I put them on the grill for about 35 minutes, and grilled one of our favorites, a thick pot roast marinated for 24 hours, then charring it on both sides on the grill. I then cut it in thin slices and it was tasty and tender, despite the cheap cut. We watched a fairly new movie called LUCY, one of those futuristic movies with lots of special effects that the millennials seem to love but Evie and I find boring, too much glitz, not enough story or character development. But we stuck with it to the end, wishing we had not started. I won't even go into the premise of the film. We then watched another episode of Masters Of Sex, which is getting really silly, lots of adultery, so that we assume no one is a master of sex.
