I have been up for an hour and only now has it lightened enough for me to see the fog which obscures the lake. Only the tree trunks, its arms, are visible. It's a warm for December morning despite the amazing agreement in Paris on global warming. At least the world seems to be able to come up with an agreement, something our politicians are unable to do. Now I am waiting for all the outrage from our friends at Fox News, serial deniers of global warming.
Lots of fog yesterday morning like today, even later in the evening it rolled into the lake. We did not do much yesterday other than get the house in order because our friends from Hudson, the Cassells were coming to spend the night. This meant once again cleaning both the downstairs and upstairs bedrooms despite the fact we have not had guests in a month. The beauty of visitors is that it forces us to do what we might not otherwise have done unless we have visitors and this is true of most people. Overnight guests or just dinner guests are motivators for keeping a clean, orderly house. So we organized and tidied up as things are never, ever clean enough, tidy enough that they cannot be done again.
We did take time off to take a walk through the Victoria/Woodlawn woods and despite the gray skies, we enjoyed it, the crunch of the leaves, the natural world of a forest, five minutes from our home. It's probably only 10-15 acres but it gives us the feeling of solitude whenever we want it. It takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes depending on whether we stop and linger to enjoy or photograph a view.

Barb And Mike Cassell |
Our friends, Barb and Mike Cassell, arrived around 4:00, so we spent the next couple of hours catching up. They are empty nesters for the first time, so they have been able to enjoy an eight day trip of hiking in the Tetons in late September and just returned from Arizona where Mike finished 10th out of 120 Seniors in a golf tournament for the best seniors in the US. Needless to say, they are both happy with their travels. We left for dinner at Forte in downtown Jamestown and were excited to see we got our table at the window in the busy bar. Our meals were great, the steak, beer, salad and potato special for 12 bucks was a hit with the girls. Everyone enjoyed their meals, the ambiance, the price and are ready to come back again. It was a fun night to be eating out.

Getting Ready For 10,000 Maniacs |
We then went the theater at Jamestown Community College to hear 10,000 Maniacs, a band that got its start here in Jamestown. In fact, three of the remaining band members went to Jamestown High with Barb Cassell. They played for close to two hours to a packed auditorium of locals, all familiar with the band, their songs. Unfortunately, their lead singer, Natalie Merchant, left the band quite a few years ago but their new lead was a talented violinist as well as singer, so it was a fun night. Like any good band, their timing, energy, and tightness made them a pleasure not only to hear but to watch. And we were only seven rows back from the stage so we had great seats.

Finale |
We didn't get home till 10:30, time enough for some bourbon and ice cold Deep Eddy Lemon flavored vodka courtesy of Beth and Rami. We sat around talking music, finding and playing some of our favorite songs from the 1970's and 1980's on Pandora or Sirius. So it was a night filled with Joe Cocker, The Band, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Milky Chance, Akron's The Black Keys, and even Barry White to end the evening. A great night with friends from our Hudson days.
