Yesterday was as sticky and close a day as I can remember, hot both inside and out, so what did I do early? Go to yoga, a class of three, but a couple of fans made it bearable. No yoga today, nor through the weekend because of the holidays. After yoga, I went to the Tractor Supply Store, looking for some cinch straps which I hoped might steady the end piece of my dock, a suggestion from a dock maker. I found them but they did not work out, the hooks to small, the strap to long, plus I could not figure out how to unwind the darn thing. My neighbor, Bill, couldn't figure it out either, which made me feel better. I will return it this morning and look for something for appropriate.
When I got home, Evie was off to do some mega shopping for the summer, so I heated up some leftover penne with sauce, toasted a bagel, and began watching the Argentina/Switzerland soccer game, prepping me for the US/Belgium game which also ended, infuriatingly, in a 0-0 tie. I have to admit I am tired of watching games which have no scoring...perhaps 'futbol' is not 'the most beautiful game after all.' Around 1:30, Evie drove in, the car groaning from all the groceries. It took us three or four trips to get everything in the house, but we are well on our way to being ready for summer, as Evie shopped not only at Wegman's but also at Sam's, picking up all kinds of paper products and 35 lbs. of frying oil! for our kids visit in three weeks. It took quite awhile to put everything away, then Evie relaxed finally under the tree, and finished the last 15 pages of BENEDICTION, by Kent Haruf, something she was looking forward to all morning. I think she's getting into to this life of leisure, of reading and relaxing. When she finished her book, she started a new Haruf book called PLAINSONG (I taught it to my seniors in 1999, I think though I don't remember anything about it). I stayed inside and watched all 94 scoreless minutes of the US/Belgium match. The US is plainly outclassed, in skills and experience. Only through hustle can they match other teams. And because it's soccer, even though you are outplayed the entire match, you still have a chance to win if you get a lucky goal. This did not happen and the US lost 2-1, a moral victory I suppose because it could have been worse.
After the game, I went out on the dock to see if the cinch straps worked; they didn't, so the rest of the afternoon, Evie and I sat out on the dock, reading till about 5:30. I then went in and brought out a tray, with a couple of beers and pretzels and we stayed on the dock until 7:15. Again, the lake was uncharacteristically quiet, the wind soft and cooling, the sun fallen behind our trees. It was easy, just sitting watching the fading sun's reflections on the lake. Around 7:30, we went in for dinner, a rotisserie chicken and Asian slaw, all from Sam's and quite easy, a nice change for Evie.
We watched the first epiosde of the new HBO series called THE LEFTOVERS. I read the book a couple of years a go by Tom Perrotta. It follows a couple of families after 2% or 140 million people just disappeared from the face of the earth. No explanations...nothing...they were just gone, including the Pope! The book and movie then imagines what happens to those who are left. Most people just try to go on with their lives, but there are always the crazies, who see the disappearance as the Rapture, as God's response to the sins of the earthlings. So phony prophets appear, the Holy Waynes, and crazies are everywhere, especially the Guilty Remnants (dressed in all white, mum, supposedly reminders to the living of their sins). Perrotta and the film satirize the crazy things people tend to believe. So far, we are not taken with it but we will give it time.
Last night's thunder and lighting storms were so spectacular that Evie stayed up and took some photos of the light show. They are amazing...too bad I sleep through it all.
