Overcast and Quiet Early, A Busy Day On The Lake To Follow

7:20
Both Evie and I slept till 7:00, wonders.  It looked like we had some rain last night as the walks are wet. The lake  is placid, a shimmery gray, with some reflections from the sun  trying to peak through the cloud cover.  A few boats are out, one ski boat just went by but otherwise, a pleasant morning here on my porch, listening to NPR interview two cooks from America's Test Kitchen.  One hint...burgers should be at least 3/4 of an inch thick, with a 1/2 inch divot in the middle before grilling.

Because yesterday was cloudy early on, I went to yoga with Chris, a fairly popular class because it's on Saturday and many people can make it.  Class was better than the last few times, more variety, less talk and I enjoyed it, enjoyed seeing a couple of people I have not seen in awhile.  When I got home, I got a call from my Turkish friend, Sami, who was thinking of coming to visit for a few days.  Unfortunately, he cannot make it to our disappointment.  We were afraid this would happen as he planned only five days in NYC before heading back to Turkey, which meant a very short trip to the lake, perhaps not worth it.  He vowed to come back in December so we will have to see.  At least we now have a clean house, lots of good food ready to cook over the next few days.

Around noon, I drove to Mayville, to pick up or copper tray which we were having a hook for hanging soldered on.  Fortunately, Dave Ward was able to do it, so now it hangs above our fire place.  Dave is an interesting guy, able to put together and or fix anything.  He also makes dock pieces, lake rakes, things like that, anything out of metal.  On the way home, I stopped at the Lighthouse and viola, they had their basket of peaches, which I bought along with a sub for lunch, ground chuck for burgers tonight.  It was very busy, the last three days of the summer for them.

We did not do much during the afternoon, still depressed by the fact that our friend was not going to visit.  Evie fished some, and I went for a long kayak ride, fished with no luck on a very busy lake. Sandy Bottom was packed, sardine like, with boats, people in the water, drinking, playing games, blasting music, like a river in the Ozarks.  Not pretty.
Porch Party

Julie and Barb

At 5:30 we went over to Barb and Jim Fox's, neighbors, for their end of the summer porch party, which we always enjoy.  This year was no exception and it seemed as though every one was ready as it was packed.  Most were neighbors, relatives of the Fox's, or friends from the past.  It was fun to see everyone again and it's interesting how well we all get along, how much we enjoy seeing each other a few times a year, in between the visits of family and friends, which take up most of our time during the summer.  Most people brought an appetizer, their own beer, so it was pretty easy for Jim and Barb to enjoy the party as well.  It turned out to be a nice evening as well, sunny but not to warm, as the long day waned.
Bemus Point Fireworks

We came home around 8:00 and sat outside on our porch for at least an hour, having a Martini and Rossi Bianco, a aperitif we learned to drink in Istanbul the last time we visited.  Every time we have it, it reminds Evie of the Bosporus, the waterway along Istanbul.  It was a fine evening to sit out side, watch the lights of the boats go by, a busy night and eventually, Bemus had an amazing fire work display, accompanied by a band playing John Phillips Souza marches.  Happy Labor Day weekend everyone.
