Cloudy, Humid, But Cooler

Our Backyard: Spydy, Hydrangeas, Butterfly Bush and Geraniums

7:00

7:30
Up at 5:45 for some reason.  It's still dark outside at this hour, so I  turn on the lights, check the temperature outside and it's down to 67º, quite a difference from yesterday's early morning 77º.  And the high today will be 70, much more palatable though it also brings rain off and on during the day. We did get about 1/4 of an inch last night and a large dead branch fell from a tree in our front yard just as I was getting my second cup of coffee.

Yesterday was almost as uncomfortable as Tuesday though it did not get quite as hot, low 80's, not high 80's.  The humidity and head still made it difficult to do anything outside because just walking made us sweat.  And I can attest to working up a sweat doing the morning dishes, that's how humid it was. We did go kayaking before it became too hot, stepping into the algae green water near the shoreline but fortunately, it cleared up as we kayaked and fished.  After kayaking, we hung out the rest of the morning until about 11:00, when I went to the CI library to return some books and forced myself to take a short bike ride through the grounds, relatively flat and interesting.  I was out only for a half hour, enough on a day like yesterday.

We stayed inside till about 3:30 when Evie decided to cut the lawn because it was supposed to rain during the night.  Well, when she finished, I was afraid she was going to have heat stroke she was so hot.  Smartly, she took a cold shower, cooling her off.  We decided to go on another cruise, towards the south end of the lake, along Hadley Bay up to Niets Crest, pleasant with a nice breeze once we got out in the center of the lake.  Unfortunately, I noticed that the dial showing RPM's was extraordinarily high, so we took it easy coming home, fearing we might over heat the engine.  I called Chris Kent and he will stop by in the next day or two to check it out.  He thinks it might just be the dial acting out of sync with the motor.  Let's hope so.  When we got back, we put the cover on the boat because of the predicted rain, then we went swimming in the clear, seemingly algae free lake, at least by our dock.  It was cool and refreshing, a chill that took the heat of the day away.

Because it was so warm and humid, we both just wanted to find a cool place and have a beer so we went to Bellini's, a lounge in the Chautauqua Suites around 6:30.  The bar tender is a friend from my yoga class, so it was fun to sit at the air conditioned bar and talk with him.   There were about ten people in the lounge, only four at the bar, a couple Evie befriended from Philly, who were in town to see the Lucy Museum, wanted to stay at the Best Western in downtown Jamestown but could not find it so they ended up at the Suites.  They have no idea of what to see other than the Lucy so Evie filled them in on some of the attractions .  The bartender's name is Loren; he played basketball at Maple Grove, was recruited to play basketball for Manhattanville College, outside of White Plains, so we had a lot in common.  He's finishing up his Master's thesis in history while making ends meet bar tending. A good guy.  We had three beers between us, stayed about an hour, enjoyed it and will definitely go back.

We  had enough of Monday's dinner, the Turkish iskender kebab, to make another meal, so we enjoyed it with salad, for the second time in three days.  Still good, perhaps even better than Monday night as Evie heated some of the kofte in the tomato sauce, making it more flavorful.  We started a couple of movies, none that we liked, then watched the first episode of a British series that's supposed to rival Downton Abbey called Last Tango in Halifax, about two widowed octogenarians, who meet and decide to get married, to the dismay of their children.  Not Downton Abbey but decent.
