Misty Morning

From Our Porch at 6:10

6:15
Up at 5:30 and have been sitting out on the porch listening to the crickets, NPR, as the lake comes into view, like a Matthew Brady Civil War photo, black and white, or like a dark room, when the negative, dipped in fluid, comes in to view. This morning also reminds me of the London seen in the 1940's movies, always foggy and damp, like Waterloo Bridge my mother's and my favorite 1940's film, a tear breaker.  Stillness best describes this morning, not a whisper of wind.  As the sky lightens, I can see heavy fog and clouds over Bemus but it looks clear above our house and a few lights from Bemus twinkle through the fog.  Not a good start to a Labor Day.  It's warm already at 6:30 and my quiet was just ruined by a Sea Doo tearing across the lake.  The day begins.

Yesterday was still a very warm day, till late afternoon when it poured, alas.  We did go for a early morning kayak paddle, off towards Long Point, to the Marina, but the water was algae filled, even smelled so we headed back to our part of the lake where the water was fine.  The algae seems to be worst in stagnant, slow moving areas like Bemus Bay.  When we got back, we decided to go to the Mayville Flea Market since it was the its last weekend.  It is always fun to walk around, see the kind of junk people want to sell.  We saw a number of our neighbors there as well, hoping to find a deal.  I did pick up a wine decanter for one dollar, something I will probably never use but hey, it was a dollar!  We walked around for an hour, got bored, then went home, stopping at Topps to pick up some Italian parsley because Evie was making a large batch of tabbouleh and it calls for lots of parsley.  Yum
Indoor Picnic

We were going to have a Labor Day picnic with our neighbors, the Leonard's and Joneses at 5:00 but it starting pouring just about that time.  So, we moved inside, hoping to at least sit on our porch but it was raining so hard and lightning that we decided to stay inside.  We never got back out, no bean bag, no eating outside this Labor Day.  About 7:00, I cooked burgers and hot dogs outside in the drizzle, and we had a great meal, a good old American picnic, inside, with potato salad, baked beans, the burgers and dogs, some tabbouleh for diversity's sake, and marinated green beans.  What else could we want? They stayed until 9:00  and fortunately it had stopped raining long enough for them to get home without getting wet.  I finished reading a terrible Harlan Coben novel called Drop Shot.  I don't think I will read him again, too silly.  We stayed up till 11:00. watching Breaking Bad, not one of the better episodes as little if anything happened, lots of sitting around and just staring into space for both Walter and Jesse. The question is: will Jesse turn on Walt or not?  I don't think so.  We will have to wait and see.
