A Happy Mom and Daughter |
Mitch and I have some whole wheat bread going, the no knead method, and it should be ready to pop in the over in an hour. It's a very sticky, wet dough, the only downside of making it, as you can hardly do anything with it as it's more like a batter than a bread dough. But the result is wonderful so I will stick with it.
Tonight is Thai shrimp night, which sounds good, after a barrage of all American meals, and tomorrow is barbecued chicken night, the kids favorite, especially the noodles cooked in chicken broth.
The house seems lacking, without Beth and Tyler, without Tom and Mary and family, but it is quieter, and it seems like there is more space, as the couches are not all taken, an only Mitch seems to occupy them, as the girls seem to spend their time upstairs in our bedroom, playing some sort of 'reality', whether house or today it's farm. They will pop down within the next hour, ready for something else, either a swim, a jaunt to the park, or play out side with their slugs and frog, still alive and well, I think.
We are getting set for Hayden's birthday on Thursday, Marisa's on Saturday, both want Juicy Lucy's but we have talked Marisa in to allowing the adults to eat something else on Saturday night. Jill will be going out shopping today to look for things for the two of them.
The weather is still overcast, threatens to rain, but doesn't, just another tenth of an inch last night, as it seems reluctant to rain on my new grass, alas. The highs in the 70's, though 80's in Buffalo, so another humid day, no doubt, so unlike any Chautauqua summer we have known. Doesn't anything get any better any more? Thank goodness for the kids, as I have had no time to listen to the news, which would surely send me up the wall.
I was thinking about how well the little girls play together, one a delight it is to watch. They were just outside playing restaurant and then moved to a picnic table, are sitting on top, with a little wagon full of dolls, talking non stop, about what I wonder. These are the days I hope they remember, of no responsbility, few adults around to invade your world of make believe, and it's just you with your friends, delighting in each other, in the world of your imagination, before moving on to another world. They have just gotten up from the table, still talking and walking, and just ran inside to get their shoes, so they can go into Granny's garden, to pick bouquets, without the help of Granny, who is off shopping. I want to ask them what's going on but it will break the spell...even asking them what they were doing seemed invasive. Contrast this with the boys, who spend most of their leisure in the house on one type of gadget or another, rarely talking with each other, listening to music, playing a game, or watching a movie. Unlike the girls, the videos provides the imaginative world, whereas the girls create their own, with dolls, forts, houses, tents. I can actually still remember some of those days, playing in the basements of friends' homes, creating hiding places, playing army or cowboys, very real worlds to a 8 year old.
No rain, just a warm day, not unbearable, as we just kept the windows open. Evie did lots of shopping, came home with some rattling on the Pilot, so I took it in, 100 bucks to fix, plus they noticed by gas line was worn out, leaking gas, another 400-500 bucks. It makes me question why we have two cars, just two to keep up, and when they are older, you just keep pouring bucks into them.
Tonight's Jill's Thai shrimp dinner, and they have made an extravagant dessert for later, some called molten lava cakes, in little pots, very chocolaty and good.
