Getting Colder

Chiefs Defeat Texans: Drew, Jill, Mary, Tom

8:13

This morning is the first time in a week that I didn't wake up to snow that needed shoveling. The reason, probably, is the cold, 14º, and may get below zero in the next few days. The ice fishing guys are out already but not as many as yesterday, perhaps because of the cold. It's 9:30 and our neighbor's son just took his young sons out to ice fish, starting them early.

Saturday was a modified football Sunday because the Chiefs, my kids favorite team was playing at 4:30. So our day was organized around watching the first half at home, then driving over to Linda and Ron's for dinner and watching the second half there. Our morning was the usual, with coffee, breakfast and the blog. Evie was busy much of the morning making sticky buns and the topping for hankies pankies. I did some shoveling and then around 10:30, drove off to the Transfer Station and dropped off our trash.  We were throwing away some booze but the transfer worker was happy to take it.

When I returned home, I asked Evie if she wanted to give me a trim, get it over with. So I pulled out a stool, got my hair wet and she trimmed my beard and hair, an increasingly onerous task since she has been doing it for the past fifty-five years. Just think of the money we saved! After my trim, I showered and had lunch, the leftover Salisbury steak, and mashed potatoes and watched my show. I started a new novel by much decorated  General Jim Stavridis called The Restless Wave, about a young man who makes his life as a Naval officer during WW II. Around 2:30, I took a brief nap, then read until the Chiefs game started at 4:30. Around 6:00, I cleared ice off our car so we could drive to Linda and Ron's for dinner.

Saturday Night Dinner

We sat around their kitchen table, enjoying wine, some pistachios, and a delicious artichoke garlic soup while occasionally watching the Chief's victory on their kitchen TV.  My daughter Jill and her husband Drew, big Chiefs fan, flew to Kansas City Friday and stayed with my son Tom and his wife Mary. They attended the Chiefs game, tailgating and watching the game, sending photos,

It looked like fun, especially since the Chiefs won. Our dinner was stuffed pork tenderloin with roasted stacked potatoes and a ricotta cake topped with whipped cream and strawberries for dessert. We can always count on a great dinner at Linda's. We headed home around 9:15 and Evie went up to bed. I watched some of the NFL playoff games until it was clear the Commanders would win.
