In 1967, Odelle Bastien, a Carribean immigrant, trying to make her way in England, is hired by the enigmatic Majorie Quick to work at the Skeleton Museum Of Art. A friend of Odelle's inherits a painting after his mother's passing by an obscure Spanish artist, Isaac Robles and asks Odelle if the museum's director would evaluate the painting. The painting creates great excitement but panic in Quick.
In 1936, Olive Schloss, daughter of a Viennese art dealer, moves with her family to Malaga, Spain just as the Civil War is breaking out. She befriends Isacc Robles, artist, and idealist, his sister, Teresa, and falls in love with Isaac.
The novel moves back in forth between the 1960s and 1930s as Odelle, with Quick's help, discovers the background to the painting, the role the Schloss's, Olive, Isaac, and Teresa play in its creation.
