DISPPEARING EARTH: JULIA PHILLIPS

Set in the Siberian peninsula of Kamchatka, Disappearing Earth takes us to world unfamiliar to most of us, a land of mountains, glaciers, a complex of social and ethnic tensions, between the Russian and indigenous cultures.  The story revolves around the kidnapping of two young girls, its effect on numerous families and individuals, all of whom have some relationship with the girls.  The novel is, then, a series of individual but related stories, inviting us into the lives of this very different world in Russia, of different cultures.  It's a great read, interesting and compelling.  It was one of the New York Times Best Ten Books of 2019.
