Slept in till 7:00, some light as I got up, to listen to the pundits discuss the State of the Union speech by Obama, though I have become less and less interested in politics.  It's more interesting watching a couple of lone fishermen walk out in to the middle of the lake, pulling sleds behind them, ready for a long morning on the lake, hoping they have found a sweet spot.  It's 26º out, the snow seems to be slowly dwindling, with little in sight.

Yoga was canceled yesterday so I was a bit at a loss early on, but we went off for a big shopping day late morning, as the bread was on a second rising.  We hit Sam's, Wegman's, bought lots of goodies for the weekend and next week when our families arrive for a winter vacation.  We have finally decided on meals for the first three or four days, but I won't reveal what they are(we could still change our mind) other than to say we will make my mother in law's cabbage rolls, so that will be one of our meals.  Mid afternoon, Evie went to the YMCA for a work out, as it has become just as much a habit for her as yoga has for me.  Without it, we feel like we have wasted the day.  The no knead bread, baked in my new dutch oven, turned out less than perfect.  The outside is nice and crusty but the inside is still a bit moist, even spongy, as if it needs to bake longer.  If anyone has a suggestion for improving it, let me know.  This has been the problem with this particular recipe.

I did get a hike in on the Woodlawn/Victoria loop around 4:30, walking with hiking boots through six inches of crunching snow.  It was fun to see all the various tracks through the woods and trying to figure out what animals made them.  One batch puzzled me, an animal with three hooves, not four, had made a trail through the forest.

For dinner, we had tacos, watched the news coverage of the siege in Bear Lake, CA, where some very good friends of ours from Robert College live.  We have not talked to them yet but will.  Then, on to the State of the Union.  I lasted for about half  of the speech before going up to read, then to bed.

Today, I hope to attend yoga, drive to Sugar Grove, PA, to pick up a couple of half gallons of Pot O Gold Milk (chocolate, white, perhaps Orange Cream)l, then we work on getting the upstairs ready for the kids.  And for dinner tonight, the Mc Clure's are returning to the lake, so we will be going out with them, most likely to the Seezurh House, where else.

  1. Hi Tom - You probably know from my blog that I'm not very handy in the kitchen, but a friend recently raved about a loaf of no-knead bread he made in a dutch oven. Recipe from Cook's Illustrated. You have to sign up for a free trial to access it: http://www.cooksillustrated.com/recipes/login.asp?docid=11829
If you try it, let us know how it goes.
Have fun with the family! Best to all.
