Forty Degrees, Another Big Thaw

Loving Winter!

Fishing off of Warner Bay

7:45

Snow Shoeing Victoria
Up at 7:30, wet and gray outside, as it's warming up alas.  Yesterday's snow covered lake has disappeared to a uniform, icy gray, but off towards the tip of Long Point, it's still snow covered.  I can never figure out the dynamics of a melting lake, why some parts are open, others, ice covered, still other sections snow covered.  Today promises freezing rain, as the white slowly disappears.  A few intrepid fishermen are out, off of Long Point.

Yesterday morning was sunny, blue skies, inviting, so we decided to cross country ski on the lake, filled with fishermen off of Long Point.  For some reason, this year they are not in the bay near the Marina, but from the tip north to the Pavilion and Warner Bay, straight across from Woodlawn.  When we got on the lake, we found it wet, so it was like skiing in a slushy from 7/11, frustrating.  We decided to try skiing in the campground and found it equally onerous.  The snow was wet, and we would hit wet spots, putting the brakes on the slide, so it was not much fun there either.  We came home, very un yoga like because it was so sunny out side and we wanted to ski, so we consoled ourselves with a breakfast of potato pancakes, fried eggs. and lots of bacon.

Evie spent a good part of the afternoon, catching up with her friends on the phone, and I watched some basketball and read.  I am really liking A FINE BALANCE, by Rohan Mintry, an Ophrah book from about ten years ago.  It's set in India, in the 1970's, and gives an interesting and realistic picture of life there for the underclass.  It reminds me of my trip there in 1975, when I spent three weeks back parking through that country.  About 4:30, we became stir crazy and went out snow shoeing through Woodlawn and Victoria.  It was much easier than yesterday's challenging hike through the Overland Trial, as the snow had compressed, and would crunch when we walked.  Most of the snow on the trees had disappeared, creating a much different feel as we walked.

We came home to a dinner of meat loaf, frozen and reheated from last week, with potatoes and gravy, still tasty and watched all of the Grammy's.  We had mixed emotions watching, not especially taken with LL Cool Jay, the host, but liking some of the musical interludes, especially various performers tribute to Levon Helm of The Band.  And we liked Zac Brown and Mumford and Sons,  and Kelly Clarkson still really can sing, especially enjoyed her tribute to Patti Page and Carole King.  We also thought the much ballyhooed Frank Ocean was terrible.  How could anyone enjoy his music. We went to bed around 11:15, to read some, then sleep.
