March 1, 2011, Snow Shoeing at Long Point

Up at 7:00 to, surprise, a gray day, a bit of sleet, mostly rain, the lake still frozen though outdoors continues to warm up, 39 degrees at the moment, supposedly 50 degrees tomorrow.  Where has winter gone?  Was it ever here?  I thought I heard a snow mobile this morning, hard to believe, and I know there were two racing by yesterday afternoon, so I am not imagining things.  Perhaps he was on his way to work.

Yesterday was a blur, a contrast to Tuesday's beautiful day, with a hike on the Overland Trail.  We finally decided to go off for a walk around 11:00,  to try Prendergast Point.  We did walk it for about 30 minutes but by the time we got back in our car, we were soaked.  And it rained most of the day, though late in the afternoon, I did walk the Woodlawn/Victoria Loop, without drizzle, and it ended up being a pleasant enough walk.  I also walked a bit on the lake, slippery, no snow, beginning to crack near shore but it doesn't see to deter the fishermen, brave souls.

We made a stir fry for dinner, with brown rice, then watched the final two episodes of Mad Men, episodes #52 and #53.  Now we are ready for the series to start again on March 10th.  It was fun to watch it for the second or third time, as so much happens over the years.  We remember the broad outlines but watching a second time, we get to see many details that we missed and, of course, forgot.  Whether it's an accurate account of the advertising world in the late 50's or 60's is irrelevant, as it's engrossing, well written, with amazingly well drawn and developed characters, especially Don Draper and his wife, Betty, and Don's colleagues,  Peggy, Rodger, and Pete.  The Guardian had a recent article where a number of critics picked out their favorite scenes, which was fun to read.  One occurred in the final episode which we watched last night, where two women, never friends, bond over Don's surprise engagement to his young, hot secretary, the shallow silliness of men and their choice of women.  A great final episode, as the firm finally signs a new client, Don gets engaged, Cooper resigns, and Peggy resigns herself to her fate and steps forward.
