Winter Wanes...Forty One Degrees, High of Fifty

Dusk Yesterday from My Walk on the Lake

7:53 AM

Sking at Long Point

Up at 6:30, to drizzle, to a slick lake, to a warm morning of forty degrees, as winter seems to have slipped, a reminder that spring is ahead perhaps, an unattractive day to come as we won't be able to hike in the woods, ski on the lake.  Perhaps we'll have to walk the Mall! It's now 7:30 without a hint of light on the horizon, just encompassing gray, sky and lake, a heavy cloud cover.  Green patches are beginning to appear through the snow, the roads muddy, time to get the mudders out.  It's supposed to rain most of the day, turn colder tonight and snow over night, perhaps 2-4 inches.  Ah Chautauqua weather.

Evie will probably workout at the Lakewood YMCA later this morning, and I may just hit Starbucks for some Java and read for an hour before we hit Weggies on senior citizen day and get our 5% discount.  Not a lot to look forward to today with this kind of weather other than staying inside, reading a good book, maybe watch a movie this afternoon, something we rarely do.

George Lang's Potato Caraway Seed Bread
Yesterday was mostly sunny, so we went off to Long Point to cross country ski and it was perfect.  We parked down by the marina, so it was mostly a flat course, as we skied out to the tip and back, then along the lake to the 1960's Fortress, past the playgrounds to the limits of the park.  It was sunny and glorious to be out, the lake white and glistening, like the snow.  Before we went sking, we put together the ingredients for George Lang's Potato and Caraway Seed bread, letting it rise as we skied.  When we returned, we shaped a couple of loaves, popped them in the oven, and had lunch, enjoying the aroma of bread baking.  We had two perfect loaves, lovely in texture, great for toast or sandwiches.

About 4:30, we both went off for walks, with our Nanos, Evie to the campground, me off along the lake shore towards Tom's Point.  As I mentioned, I love this hour of the day, dusk, as the colors are unusual, mostly gray but there's something about it that attracts me.

Fallen Tree at Sandy Beach
We had a delicious Slovenian dinner, beans and potato soup and pork chops with sauerkraut.  We watched Crazy Stupid Love, with Steve Carrell and Brian Gosling, a cute movie about Carrel's failing marriage(he's a loser of course) and how he gets remade by Gosling's character.  Silly at times, improbable, some grossness, of course, but also moving at times.  It's worth watching.
