Bee's mother disappears after an attempt by her father to have Bernadette institutionalized. What leads to the father believing that Bernadette needs to be institutionalized is the first part of the book. The second half describes the attempts by both Bee, the daughter, and her father to find her Mom. The family lives in Seattle where the father works for Microsoft; the Mom, Bernadette, won a McArthur Genius grant for a couple of original buildings she designed (using materials within 30 miles of the building site) before moving to Seattle (which she hates and has given up building, her passion). That should whet your appetite.
