It's just about 8:00, much of the early fog has burnt off and the sun is brightly shining on the lake. It's the first morning which really feels like the end of summer, the beginning of fall.  It's a chilly 45º and there's no action on the lake, as some of the summer residents have left for the year, migrating to their winter homes.  This is the best time of the year on the lake, however, cool temperatures, empty lake, and the coming of autumn colors.

Biff And Bass Boats

Sunday Morning Kayaking

Long Point In The Fog
Yesterday turned out to be another good day although we did not miss the irony of our beautiful and full day contrasting with the tragedy of the hurricane hitting Florida.  It reminds me of watching the Gulf War begin as we sat warm and cozy in our homes, the wonder of technology.  Now we can witness not only hurricanes but also wars in real time.  Anyways, yesterday for us turned out well although we had little plans early.  We had a leisurely coffee, trying to decide if we needed a Keurig type of coffee maker or not.  No decision yet.  Around 9:30, we decided to go kayaking, just as the bass tournament next door was beginning, late because of the fog.  In no hurry, we took our time paddling down to Wells Bay, across to Long Point and home.  It had the feel of an early June morning for some reason, perhaps the temperature, the mostly quiet lake, the lack of wind.  All was good except for the green algae bloom on the lake.  It too will pass.  So will the lake flies!

We both felt good about ourselves, having kayaked so we decided to work in the garden and plant the perennials we had bought on Saturday.  I got on my work jeans, filled a wheel barrow with good compost.  The difficult part was to figure out where the plants would go.  Much of the garden is overgrown with daisies, so we ended up digging them out and putting a large clump under our trellis. We tried to place the coneflowers together, as well as the fall anemones.  We were out for about an hour, then watered the new plants.  By the time we finished, it was 1:30.

We planned to drive to The White Carrot restaurant at 2:00, so I quickly showered, put on my jeans and vest and was ready for fun.  The White Carrot is the tres expensive new restaurant near the Chautauqua Institution.  It is hard to get out of there less than a couple hundred bucks per couple. They were having, however, an outdoor barbecue, all you could eat and drink (wine and beer) for thirty bucks a person.  We decided that because it was a beautiful and cool afternoon, that we would go, a good decision.

Afternoon At The White Carrot
The restaurant is located on a couple of acres, with a garden and large pond in their backyard where they were having the barbecue.  They had put up a tent, set out tables and chairs, and I would say 75 to 100 people attended over the six hours it was open.

Uncle Ben's Remedy
We were lucky to get a table, in the sun, and people watched and listened to a great band from Versailles, NY, called Uncle Ben's Remedy.  They played all kinds of genres, from rock to country western, to ballads.  People danced, drank wine and beer, enjoyed the barbecue and sides, as the afternoon sun waned.  We stayed for close to three hours, loving the band, drinking too much beer, again.  We left about 5:00 as people were starting to go home.

Barbecued Chicken, Sides, And A Beer
The downside of an afternoon like this is that we felt lazy, lacking any energy, the rest of the day.  So we sat inside, looking at the sunny afternoon, watching the weather channels say and show the same thing over and over again.  Fortunately, we had a respite from the weather news, as we watched Real Time with Bill Maher and the 60 minutes interview with Steve Bannon for relief.  Bannon came across as 'truly evil', a real threat to democracy, our way of life.  He's a walking definition of Eric Hoffer's true believer.  He's got religion...Trump.  Scary.
