Home Again

Yippee

6:28

7:47

It's 6:40, with a cloudless sky, the horizon just beginning to show a touch of yellow on a 44º morning. It looks like a fine day, the last until maybe Monday as rain is forecast, and maybe even snow over the weekend. It's 9:15 and I just returned from breakfast in Bemus and now it's off to yoga.

Kayak Morning

North

Yesterday was a good, no a great day as I picked up Evie from the Buffalo Airport and her flight was easy and even early, praise the Southwestern sky gods. As for me, I had a busy morning, with a good paddle, then off to yoga class with Tara. She introduced us to an interesting ten-minute of light exercise called Joints and Glands. I had never heard of it but a few of the standings exercises are as follows: stretches, twists, rolls, rotations, swings, and squats. After these, we were back to a regular yoga class.

I was home by 11:30 and began to get organized for my trip to the airport. I made sure the kitchen was cleaned up, and the living room passable, and had lunch, soup, and a sandwich. I then showered, shaved and brushed my teeth, and was off to pick up Evie just before 2:00. I stopped at Exit 58 and got gas at the Seneca Nation gas station where gas was forty-seven cents cheaper than around here. I parked and walked into the airport just as Evie texted me that she had landed. We waited for her bags for ten minutes and were on our way home by 4:00.

She filled me in on her visit, all the fun and good times, so our drive home went quick. By 5:45, we were happily ensconced on our couches, with a Manhattan, good cheese, and crackers. Back to normal. Evie could not say enough about what a great host her sister Claire and her husband Henry were, and how much fun it was to see her sisters, Jean and Elaine, and all of the sisters' families, especially the grandchildren. It was a memorable six days. We did not stress about dinner, just heated up a couple of hot dogs, made a salad, and that was it. We watched Jeopardy and the news, ending the night with Evie's favorite dessert, Nutty Buddies. Everything seems back to normal. Love it.

We ended yoga class with the following poem by Rumi which everyone liked.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

by Rumi
