7:36 |
It's 7:40 and I have been up for an hour, watching the sky lighten, the fog rising, then sliding down the lake, like steam from an engine, partially obscuring Long Point. It should be a decent day, some sun, some clouds, a high in the '60s.

Fog Rising at 7:37 |
We spent a good part of the day on the road yesterday, driving to Buffalo and back, taking most of the afternoon. The morning, however, as usual, with kayaking, writing the blog, and breakfast before our plumber came over to give our boiler a check-up. He was in and out within 20 minutes, all was well until we came home late afternoon and found we had no heat nor hot water. We called the office left a message and hopefully, he will be back this morning. Around 10:30, we drove to my car guy and dropped off the Honda Accord because we were smelling gas, hopefully, a problem that can be fixed cheaply. Good luck, right. I decided to skip kayaking this morning because I was hoping the plumber would appear.
I had lunch at noon, Evie's squash bisque with a bagel, topped with peanut butter and watched my show until we had to leave for Buffalo at 12:30. At 2:00, I had my stitches removed from my arm and we were then on our way to explore Sunset Bay, an area with supposedly great beaches and two bars on the beach. What a disappointment, two ugly beachfront buildings, both closed, a gray, windy day on the beach, the area a mismatch of shacks and cottages, some 25 feet wide, about as unattractive an area as I have ever seen along Lake Erie's coast.

Lake Erie |
It shows what happens when there is no zoning, just attempts to make money. It could have been different, as the Cassadaga Creek empties into the lake at this point. Unfortunately, a trailer park inhabits the tip. We spent five minutes, taking a photo of the lake, then got the heck out of there and headed home. We stopped at Tuscany, a neat deli in Fredonia and bought city chicken for dinner, a throwback to our early days.

Whiskey Hill Tavern |
We decided to stop in Cassadaga at the Whiskey Hill Tavern because we had heard that the Halloween decorations in this bar were fantastic. We were there at 3:50 and waited with ten other people for it to open at 4:00. And it was worth the stop as the bar and dining room were decorated to the extreme, with ghosts, skeletons, pumpkins, whatever might remind one of Halloween. We loved it as did the people, even families that kept streaming in filling up the place and parking lot by the time we left after a beer and pretzels at 5:00. We asked when it would be a good time to get there to have a table on weekends and the answer was 4:30, the same on Thursday, maybe later on Monday through Wednesday. We will be back because their menu and specials looked interesting.

Autumn In New York |
We were home to a chilly house at 4:30 and found out we had no heat. Evie spent the next hour in the kitchen making two large bowls of homemade applesauce, one of her favorite sides. We had our disappointing city chicken (it was basically breaded ground pork on a stick), with Brussel sprouts and sweet corn, both tasty. We struggled with our series, watching an episode of the new series GOLIATH on Prime but it was boring. We then tried another series called Jack Irish on Acorn also boring and violent, so we did not have a good night of viewing. We need a good series that is not your standard violent cop show.
Our beautiful granddaughters in their homecoming finery.
