RAIN OVERNIGHT

7:01
7:29
I was up part of the night listening to thunder, seeing lightning, for how long I am not sure.  I got up at 5:45 and was surprised how much rain had fallen overnight because I hardly heard it on the roof.  It's now 7:15, some clouds and clear skies and the first herons I have seen in weeks just flew by.  Where have they been?

Yesterday was a long day, again, as it seemed as though there was nothing to do.  There is always something to do but it seemed that way to me.  I did not feel like kayaking, biking, or going for a hike though I could have done any of the three.  So I had a long morning coffee, then breakfast.  Fortunately, our builder,  Scott called and wanted to come over and pick up our pantry doors which he is redoing for us.  So that broke up part of the morning and we talked about the great house in Magnolia that he is now working on.  We hope to go through it some day just to see what it's like.  It's one of the last great houses left on the lake.

I then drove to the post office, to send Marisa her birthday present, as she turns thirteen, a teenager on the 13th and Hayden 15 years old tomorrow.  Because our pantry doors were gone, Evie got the bright idea of clearing it out, then re-painting the insides.  She worked on this in between short spans on the dock.  Because of the southerly wind, the dock was almost unbearable, hot and humid so she did not last long.

Just after lunch, a leftover Cuban, I brought in another float and put the cover on my boat because rain was forecast for the next few days.  I then took a brief nap and with Evie watching off and on as she was cleaning out the pantry, we watched the men's volleyball team throw away another match to the Italians, basically, giving them no chance for a medal.  Around 4:00, I gathered the drying weeds on our lake wall and took them up the hill, hopefully for the last time.  Fat chance.

Around 6:00, we relaxed with a glass of wine and watched the brouhaha about Donald Trump's latest gaffe or as Tom Friedman put 'wink wink to 2nd amendment rights.'  Hear is the text of what he said so each of us can make up our own mind what he meant.

"Hillary wants to abolish -- essentially abolish the Second Amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know," "But I tell you what, that will be a horrible day, if Hillary gets to put her judges in, right now we're tied."

If you listen to all of that portion of his speech, it's pretty clear to us that he was suggesting that gun owners (not 'all' his supporters) could take matters in their own hands (the nomination of liberal judges by the new elected President Clinton) and it would be 'horrible.' It was then fun and sad to listen to Fox New and Republicans like the nauseating Rudy Giuliani spin it and explain that he did not mean what he said.  I don't blame them...his words were egregious and careless and unconscionable.

Anyways, we had leftover ziti for dinner, with a salad, watched some Bill Maher, the Olympics though we were both bored by them, even the gymnastics as all the participants look like clones, genetically engineered for this particular event (even though they weren't).  We may be the only ones who are not enthralled with them.  It was good to get back to Richard Russo, to his early novel NOBODY'S FOOL.  He is wonderful at getting into the heads of various characters.
