I woke up at 6:00, to darkness, then an increasingly foggy, dead calm morning, the far shore fading, the fog thickening. It's already humid despite the 66º and will get into the mid 80's later in the day. Rain was forecast on and off yesterday to no avail. It's been a week or two since we have had any precipitation. Time to get out the watering cans, fill them with lake water, and water the garden, bushes, and plants...again.
Thursday was like today will be, like Wednesday was, hot and humid, a breezeless morning, an afternoon where the wind picks up, cooling us on the dock. We were having company for dinner yesterday, our neighbors, Ken and Marjorie Scholtz and mutual friend, Charlie T. We have gotten together over the past three or four years, so it's a two or three times a year thing, either at our house or Scholtz's, or out for dinner. Thus, we spent the morning cleaning what I thought was an already spiffy house. I vacuumed and organized while Evie prepped dinner, chicken picata, with rice and a corn, tomato, and avocado salad. She likes to have as much done before anyone arrives, so by noon things were virtually ready, table set, house clean, food prepped.
We then had the rest of the afternoon free to relax, enjoy the breeze out on the dock. It was stuffy and warm on our porch, cooler under the tree, but best out on the dock, surprisingly cool, especially when the sun hid behind the clouds. We read, sun bathed, swam when we wanted to cool off and came in to get ready for our guests around 5:00.

Dinner With Our Neighbors |
They arrived around 6:30, bearing a bottle of wine, and it had cooled off enough on the front porch to sit out with our wine and appetizers for an hour. Like us, the Scholtz's have much of their summer taken up with family, especially grandchildren so we had much to talk about, as we swapped stories about our marvelous, wonderful grandchildren. Dinner was great, the chicken picata tender and succulent, the salad refreshing. For dessert, we had one of my all time favorites, peach crisp with ice cream (in fact, I am going to have it for breakfast). That started us talking about desserts, then pies, then Portage Pie in Westfield, which they had never been to. So we all went in and watched the PBS show from this past week called "A Few Good Pie Places." And Portage Pie was featured in the show. Coincidentally, the Scholtz's were driving to Westfield today, so they vowed to stop and get a pie on the way home. After watching the show, it was close to 10:00, so we said our goodbye's. We looked at the kitchen and both said, let's leave it for tomorrow morning, a good idea at the time but not so at the moment.
It's 8:40 and the fog suddenly evaporated, Long Point now in view, the sun hitting the lake. Our day begins.
