It's 7:45, 61º out, a vast, threatening cloud cover spans the eastern shore. There are blue skies off to the west, dark clouds to the east and south, as if the weather gods cannot make up their mind. Thus, it's a gray morning, the lake wrinkled, empty, ready for kayaking.
Yesterday we went out on the lake for a paddle for another paddle, around Long Point, where Evie found another raft of ducks sitting on a tree branch and she spent a good ten minutes photographing them. We then went across to Wells and, as usual, the wind picked up appreciably, so we had to fight our way back to our yard. Still, it was worth to be out on what we consider 'our lake,' as we seem to be the only one's out on it most mornings.

Since we were having Ron and Linda over for dinner, we needed some groceries, so I drove off to Wegmans, stopping first at Ryders Cup for a coffee, then on to Wegmans. While I was shopping I ran into Karen, one of my blog readers, who I ran into a month ago, also at Wegman's along with her husband Carter. They live in Virginia, in a town near where our daughter Jill lives. Karen is from this area, loves spending her summers here and came across my blog while living in Virginia. It was fun to see her again.
I was home around 12:30 and Evie had put together the moussaka, so it was ready for baking later in the day and she made a loaf of Italian bread, having started it on Monday with a biga, letting it rise overnight. Once the car, was emptied, the groceries put away, the kitchen cleaned up from all the prepping, I had a couple of tuna sandwiches for lunch. Evie, however, decided to go out on the dock, despite the wind and partly cloudy sky, and finish her book. I read some, am getting into my Civil War Novel,
The Killer Angels, set during the battle of Gettysburg. That's how we spent our afternoon, reading either inside or on the dock.
The McClure's came over around 6:15, having just finished up a visit from Linda's sister, nephew, wife, and son. It was great fun but tiring. We know. We sat on the front porch for an hour, talking about their visit with their relatives. Dinner was like a meal from a Greek taverna except the moussaka was not dripping olive oil. We also had corn, a salad and home made bread, just what I wanted. Afterwards, we watched the last ten minutes of Jon Stewart's final show, when Bruce Springstein and the E Street Band came on stage and played Born To Run as the entire Daily Show family danced their last dance. It gave us the chills. And for some reason, we then sat in the TV room until 10:00, just talking about the summer, family visits, and, of course, the Republican debate. They left then and we were tired enough to just say the heck with the dishes; we will do them in the morning, something I regret at the moment as I look at the kitchen. At least we have the entire day to get them done.
