Purple Martins Residence |
Back at the lake and woke at my usual time, 6:00, to a gray, windy and cool morning. Fog is rising off towards Long Point. All the docks are in, making the lakefronts look cluttered when compared to the natural look for much of the year. Never thought of that before this morning; we have been used to the docks being out the past eight months, so its a bit jarring to see them in, along with the boats and lifts.
We left Darien at 6:10, to a clear sky but by the time we crossed the Tappan Zee and drove into the Poconos, we hit the rain which plagued us most of the way home to Chautauqua Lake. At times it was torrential but not for long. The ride, as always through the Poconos, is breathtaking. In contrast to the bare boned, tree less hills at the beginning of March, the mountains were now clothed in the dark green of trees, vast and late spring like, with streams dotted occasionally by fly fishermen. We made great time, getting home around 1:30, just over six and a half hours. It was, of course, raining when we got to the lake, so we unpacked just part of the car, waiting till later to finish. Everything seemed fine at the lake, dock, house and yard though the grass was unusually high since Evie had been away for a couple of weeks.
Around 4:30, my crazy wife got the idea that a dip in the lake might perk her up, so she put on her suit, went out to the dock, fished a bit, then jumped in the lake and washed her hair. The water was much warmer than in mid May, refreshing but not bone chilling cold. It was the wind, when she got out, which chilled her. I am going to wait for it to warm up before I jump in.

Rainy Lakeside |
We discovered that we had left the cupboard bare when we left back in mid May so we had to really scrounge to fine something to eat, a half a package of pasta, a bottled pasta sauce and two Southwestern salads from Mickey D's, which were surprisingly tasty. Before dinner, we did relax with a Mannie and cheese and crackers, watching the clouds turn threatening, then start to pour in earnest on the lake's surface. And Evie amused herself, taking 'artistic' photographs through the rain splattered windows.

We watched some of Jon Stewart and one episode of Nurse Jackie before going up to read early for us, around 9:45.
I am going to start up with yoga this morning, hit Wegman's to pick up lots of staples, get the mail, a typical first day back to the lake.
