7:30, A Frigid Morning |
Up way too early, 5:20 for some reason, perhaps still overdosing on Steve Job's biography. A weather advisory starts this afternoon, with snow coming tonight and tomorrow, up to ten to nineteen in some areas, two or three in others. That's a big help. Right now, there's a dusting of new snow and it remains cold, 21ยบ, not getting much higher during the day.
About the only thing I accomplished yesterday was putting together the dough for no knead bread(it takes ten minutes), which I will bake this morning. It must rise from 18-24 hours. I have made it a number of times before and each time the dough is different; this time it was sticky, so I had to add quite a bit more flour. We will have to see how it turns out. About 11:00, we drove off to Lakewood to get a few things done for Christmas. We stopped first at Ryder's Cup, to get a cup of coffee and pick up some of the cards they sell made by students at the Resource Center. We then spent the next hour in Walmart; I won't tell you why because that would be giving away a Christmas surprise. It's quite a store, one I could easily live in if I wanted. There's nothing like Christmas time for gifts or presents that are absolutely useless, ridiculous, and silly but no doubt will sell well. It's amazing what junk people will buy, myself included. After an hour in Walmart, there's nothing to do but go home and take a nap, which I did. Shopping, for me, is exhausting, bringing back those childhood memories of shopping with my Mom at Higbee's or May Company, sweating in my winter coat, nauseous, wondering when it would ever end. Shopping today for most, however, is a kind of therapy; when you are bored or depressed, go shopping, buy something and you instantly feel better until you get the visa bill three weeks later. Bah Humbug!
Evie spent the afternoon working on a Christmas present for the granddaughters, something she loves doing. I spent it reading more of the Jobs biography, napped as I mentioned, then about 4:00, despite the cold and darkening sky, we drove over to Bemus and walked Lakeside Drive, fighting the wind and cold most of the way. Half way down our walk, we wondered what in the world we were doing, walking on a dark street, wind blasting us, cold and tired, yet when we were done, we felt good about ourselves, the object I suppose.

We were home by 6:00 and Evie made up a spaghetti sauce, pulled some of her homemade meatballs out of the freezer, and we had dinner, with a salad. We watched another episode of Masters of Sex and we both are fast becoming fans. The story, especially the complicated personal and professional lives of the two major characters, is compelling, the setting, the late 1940's interesting, and Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as Masters and Johnson amazing. I cannot imagine them as anyone other than their characters. Rotten Tomatoes, which rates films and TV, gives it the top rating for a new TV series.
