7:37 |
Up before 7:00, to sounds of the snow plow clearing our road, not our parking space which is fine. We prefer to shovel the area because the plow always seems to destroy our parking area. We have about a half a foot of snow, with a few more inches to come. It's very cold 18 º, the lake frozen in some places, open in others, a mass of gray and white splotches. This is the most substantial snow so far this winter for us; we missed the storm over Thanksgiving so we are enjoying its beauty, wondering where to hike this morning, probably Long Point State Park.

A Walk in Snow |
It snowed some yesterday mid morning, so after we baked bread, which turned out pretty well, we decided to walk the trail along the old railroad tracks next to Webb's. It was a good decision because the path is quite wide, mostly frozen, as we walked along above the wetlands or trees on a raised trail. We tromped to the Mayville/Sherman road, about forty five minutes out and back, in a snowy world much of the way which Evie loves. In fact, she wanted to go kayaking when it started snowing earlier but the lake was frozen in close, so we couldn't get our kayaks out. After we walked, we picked up the fixings for chili at Topps which sounded good to both of us. And we stopped at the Lighthouse, bought some ground chuck and fresh Italian sausage, as well as some salmon for dinner.

Webb's Trail |
We felt we lived on a wild life preserve yesterday, as the lake was filled with all sorts of water fowl for most of the day, many literally in our front yard, Tundra swans feeding along our lake wall. We have always had some activity but not like this. Most seem to have disappeared this morning though I noticed a raft of buffleheads in front of Fox's house.

A Moment of Sun |
In the afternoon, we prepared for the worst as they were talking about a storm coming but it does not seem as if it was any big deal, at least in our area of Chautauqua County, no school closings, roads cleared though we did get some snow. We both enjoyed the leisure of a cold afternoon, with occasional snow but little accumulation. I am almost finished with Steve Jobs biography and have already started writing my review of the book because there is so much to tell. We had our typical salmon dinner, baked in foil in a 500º oven for 15 minutes, served with garlic spinach and rice. It's interesting how we get in a rut, a good one I might add, and when we have salmon, we always return to the tried and true. We watched some TV, nothing special, then went up to bed to read before sleep, hoping to wake up to a snowy morning.
