An epic historical novel, a family saga of four generations of Koreans beginning with the brutal Japanese occupation of Korea between1910-1945. Throughout the novel, we are witness to the Japanese degradation of Koreans, of anything Korean. Nevertheless. Sunja, the much-loved daughter of a poor Korean family, is saved when a minister offers to marry her and bring her to Japan, avoiding the genocide in pre-WW II Korea. Her family ends up prospering, becoming wealthy in the Pachinko business, despite Japanese racism. A bit slow at the start, I ended up really enjoying it.
