What A Spectacular Day On The Lake |
8:24 |
It's 8:36, light snow is blurring my view, as fishermen trudge in and out to the lake. It's 18º and yesterday's blue skies have disappeared and it's back to Chautauqua gray, alas. As is par for Sunday morning, I have been listening to CSPAN, as callers comment on the insurrection on 1/6/21, a troubling diversity of opinions as usual.
Yesterday was another spectacular day on the lake and I know I have been using that word more than usual lately. We woke to blue skies and sunshine and knew we wanted to take advantage of the day like many who live around the lake. So we decided to put off the gathering trash and trip to the Transfer Station and cross country skied on the lake.
A Confusing Statement |
So by 10:00, we were out on the lake, skiing towards the tent with the flags flying, trying to decipher their message. Well, flag #1 had the letters BLM but underneath the words "Busch Light Matters." The second flag had a photo of Kanye West, with the words "don't tread on ye". The third flag had a photo of Kim Jung-Un, with the words, "Live, Love, Laugh". So our questions were answered but no one was in the hut, not anytime yesterday, not this morning. We skied on down to Sandy Bottom and back, into the wind, but loving the sunshine, the blue skies, just being on the lake in February with many others.
We were home by 11:00 and I decided to put together my favorite Black Bean Soup from the Moosewood Cookbook. It's fast and easy, topping off with sundried tomatoes once the beans and tomatoes and spices have simmered for a half hour or so. Once that was done I was off to the Transfer Station by noon, a busy place every Saturday morning. When I returned, I had a bowl of black bean soup and a couple of slices of Evie's black bread, toasted, smothered with butter. I continued with my new show, Bang, and am getting into it. I read and tried to nap until 3:30, looking for something to do,
Neighbors Out For A Walk |
We then decided to take advantage of the sun and hit the lake one more time. We skied across the lake to Long Point, something we are loath to do because we are never sure of the safety of the ice. So many people were out on the lake, however, that we decided to do it, Once we got across, we ran into our neighbors, out for a lake walk on this beautiful afternoon. We then skied around Long Point, talking to a fisherman who had rigged ten holes with a device that flips up a flag when a fish bites his line. Once he sets up each line, he returns to his tent, enjoys a liquid refreshment, and waits for a flag to fly. That's the kind of fishing I might enjoy. We then skied back across the lake, into the shade as the sun began to set behind the shoreline. We were out for just about an hour.
Skier Sees His Shadow |
We then relaxed on the couch, watching the sky begin to darken, the fishermen head home until it was time for dinner. After skiing, Evie had put the leftover Man Pleasing Chicken, rice, and broccoli in the oven to heat so that dinner was ready to eat by 6:45. We decided to watch a movie on Hulu called The Assistant. I had come across it when reading about the top ten movies of the year in the NYTimes, One critic put it at #1, When I checked it on the Rotten Tomatoes website, the critics gave it a 92%, the audience, 25%. Well, we are in the 95% group although admit to it not being exciting, no fisticuffs, judo, no car chases or killings, just the humdrum day of an assistant in an office. Some who have worked in an office in a subordinate position may identify with the mindless tasks, the humiliations, the sexism. We ended the night with two Better Things but are not enjoying the season as much as the first two.
