A Warm and Sticky Morning

Old Young Man on Dock

7:00

An unusual feel to the morning because of the heat and humidity.  For the next day or two, it's supposed to get unseasonably warm, southerly winds, with highs in the 80's or 90's depending upon where you live.  Not our kind of day, for sure, so we may just kick back, in our house, air conditioning on for the first time in a month.  Bring back the fall.
Wood Carving at Sunset  Bay

New Mc Mansion at Sunset Bay

Two major activities yesterday, as we continue to enjoy just taking it easy, no big projects, no large goals other than savoring the lake, the dock, the next couple of weeks outdoors as much as possible. So, we went for a long walk yesterday morning, through Long Point Park, down to Sunset Bay and back, hiking in the damp woods,  muddy trails.  An amusing incident did happen.  As we started our walk, we noticed a prison van, a  group of green clad guys chopping wood, with an armed guard watching them.  We took a closer look, got the attention of the unamused guard, and then went for our walk.  About ten minutes out, we heard three gun shots and Evie, imagination run wild, was sure that the prisoners shot the guard and were now spreading out through the woods, escaping.  Needless to say, that scenario was developed in detail as we continued our walk, with some anxiety until we got back to our starting point and realized the van and prisoners were gone?  Did they escape?  Shoot the guard?  We still don't know for sure but there was nothing in the paper this morning.  We were out for over an hour and a half, and it  felt good to be back in the woods again, something we have not done since June.

For lunch, Evie had made a large pot of vegetable soup, so I had the soup, enriched by some fresh pasta noodles from last night's dinner,  along with a couple of left over twice baked potatoes.  As you can tell, we love and make use of left overs!  Mid afternoon, after reading on the dock, we paddled off in our kayaks, determined to catch some fish.  We fished off of Long Point, encountering too many weeds, so we went back to the reeds area, just this side of Wells Bay and had little luck there.  We then fished the docks along Victoria and Woodlawn, having nary a bite.  We are the original zen fishermen, goal-less fishing, 'empty and marvelous,' as we try to convince ourselves.
Half Inch of Rain Last Night

Around 5:30, we sat on our porch, enjoying a beer, some cheese and crackers as it started to rain though the Web indicated there was no rain in sight...typical.  When the rain let up, Evie put together Turkish koftes (small, egg shaped spicy meat balls) and I grilled them outside, as the trees dripped on the grill.  Evie then made a quick, spicy tomato sauce and browned squares of pita bread.  We then put our Iskender kebabs together, pita squares, kofte on top, then tomato sauce, and a dollop of yogurt, Greek of course, one of our favorite meals (and we have a lot of them).  We watched some John Stewart and Stephen Colbert from last week and the last two episodes of Nurse Jackie, Season Four, ending with Jackie getting fired.  So it looks like we are going to have to buy Season Five from Apple TV as Netflix does not yet offer Season Five.  Bummer.  Before going to bed, I finished my first Vish Puri novel, THE CASE OF THE MISSING SERVANT,  a detective story set in New Delhi, India, by Tarquin Hall, a fun read.  And I started my third or fourth Bernie Gunther novel, THE ONE FROM THE OTHER, set in Nazi Germany.  Nothing like having a good book to read!

Just as I was finishing this blog, Tyler, our grandson called, to say good bye as he is heading off to Dartmouth College this morning to start his freshmen year.  How thoughtful of him to call to say aloha, how exciting for him, as he begins his college career.  I can still remember my arrival at Ohio University as a freshmen fifty two years ago, scared and excited to be off on my own for the first time.
