Up at 7:00 to a chilly house, 49º outside, a streak of rising sun off towards Bemus, as a quiet morning begins on the lake. After a busy weekend of boating, the lake is practically empty, an occasional fishing boat may cruise by but for now, the lake seems empty, even lonely.
Sunday was a cool, breezy day, great for sailing as our neighbors, the Kinney's, proved as they were out sailing a good part of the day. For some reason, soon after we got up, Evie said she would like to have the Scholtz's over for dinner, like we have not had enough company over the past week. What can I say but sure. So, after another breakfast of peach crisp, covered with freshly cut peaches and ice cream, we stopped at Scholtz's and invited them to dinner. We then went to the CI for our walk, a cool, even crisp morning for a walk. Most of the front yard gardens are beginning to take on the look of fall, the hydrangeas turning colors, blooms starting to die out, and the leaves just beginning to turn and fall, depending on the tree. After our walk, we stopped at the Lighthouse, then Tops, then the liquor store before returning home. Once home, Evie began to prep our dinner, making up a vodka pasta sauce, grilling some shrimp on the stove. Once that was done, she made up some pasta dough, and then she could relax the rest of the afternoon until dinner time. While we worked in the kitchen, me doing dishes, we listened to the Browns lose to the Dolphins on Sirius Radio, mostly because we enjoy the enthusiasm of the announcer Jimmy Donovan. And for me, it reminds me of my childhood, listening to the Browns play on sunny and warm Sunday afternoons, then, after the game, going outside to play football with the neighborhood guys, pretending you were Jim Brown or Otto Graham. After the game, we sat out in the side yard to avoid the wind, and it was pleasant in the sun, cool in the shade.

Making Fresh Pasta with Ken and Marjorie Scholtz |
The Scholtz's came over at 6:00 and it was warm enough to sit out on the front porch, sip wine, enjoy horseradish cheese and crackers, and catch up on the latest Woodlawn news, the family visits this past August. We went in the house around 6:45 and gathered around the kitchen island, as Evie showed everyone how to make fresh pasta, in this case fettuccine. It went well though we still have not figured out how to dry the pasta after having made it. It sits only for about five minutes but you have to set it somewhere while you finish the batch, so we got out the old wooden clothes dryer and it worked fine. Once the pasta was made, Evie put it in with the vodka and shrimp sauce, let the noodles soak up the sauce for about 15 minutes and then we had dinner, with salad and bread. It was a good night to eat inside, cozy as it was getting colder outside, and we all enjoyed the meal, as we told stories about the joys of having grandchildren, our travels, our lives in education. We finished the meal with my breakfast, peach crisp, with fresh cut peaches and ice cream. The Scholtz's went home about 9:30 and we quickly did up the dishes so we could watch the latest episode of Breaking Bad, again a bit of a let down as very little happened until the last few minutes when a gun battle took place between drug agents and drug dealers, reminiscent of something out of a 1950's John Wayne western where there's lots of shooting but miraculously no one goes down, at least till next week. And, if Hank and Gomie die, then Walt is home safe once again, only Jessie's guilt remains a danger. Three more episodes to go.
